Demands for loyalty to the president = American fascism?

Suddenly, all things Republican seem to require personal loyalty to Bush. There were the loyalty oaths we kept hearing about in connection with campaign rallies. Now Frist is saying Spector isn't good enough to be chairman of the Judiciary Committee because he puts what he thinks is right ahead of loyalty to the president. And the CIA is apparently in the throes of a Nazi-style purge of everyone who isn't a Bush loyalist.

What the hell is going on here? Americans have always expected that their representatives in Congress would be loyal to their constituents' interests and to their own consciences -- not to any president. And the civil service was created in large part to create a staff of public servants with no party affiliations.

Are the Bushies deliberately trying to set up a fascist system, or can they just not help themselves?

14. Someone told me a long time ago, a dictatorship is fine...

as long as you agree with the dictator. I'm trying to keep the faith, in the midst of this madness and my own personal pit of despair, that the day will soon come when the Right Wing will splinter as those within its ranks begin to understand that they do not agree with this dictator after all. It's a carte blanche thing, you see-they would have to agree with everything, and that's pretty hard to do when so many diverse points of view will be jockeying for supremacy. So little by little, it will all begin to unravel and many in their ranks will retreat and scatter. That's my hope. Mostly, I hope it will not be too late for all of us when many RWs comprehend what they have wrought.

Throughout Junior's first term, we were constantly told to "stand behind" or "support" our president.

I wrote to my worthelss sycophantic senators asking that they support an investigation into the "intelligence" that was being used to drag us into this ill-advised war, and the replies I received back were tantamount to a pat on the head and an admonition to "support our President during these difficult times."

I've been told that dissent, protest, and criticism - especially where the invasion of Iraq is concerned - are unpatriotic and un-American.

Funny, that. I'd always thought that dissent and freedom of speech were the cornerstones of this country, and that it was actually *fascism* that is un-American. I guess I was wrong.
