Cable news free now for 2 weeks...
anybody else? I even have taken a step back from all news except DU, however, the Powell resignation and Rice SOS position is "hooking" me back in, so I'm gonna try to "pace" myself :eyes:

1. I watched Fox news for 5 minutes in a motel room once. That is the only
time that I have ever seen cable news as far as I can remember

4. I ditched cable news, too.
Except for Olbermann (and TDS). I feel much better as a result of watching Animal Planet and X-Files reruns, and I don't miss Tweety or any of the rest of those cheap vaudevillians who masquerade as journalists.

:puke:

5. I gave up television
many years ago. I used to have a TV to play video movies on. Now I play DVDs on my computer so there isn't even a TV in my house anymore.

10. Had quite a few the first week--actually
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 12:25 AM by Blue_Roses
it just felt like a break-up from an abusive relationship. Even though it was a "love-hate" thing, there was still a void. Now I am using more positive things to fill the void. I've been politically active for over 20 years and this is the first time I have "bottomed out" from such a huge disappointment. Didn't see it coming either...thought 2000 was bad but, good grief...

8. Not stopped but extremely diminished here
Went and got a Bash Bush CD along with a Retro 70's 2 disk. It's been great!

I did feel a little lost when I heard on the local news that Powell had resigned and Condi the Incompetent was name SOS. *sigh*

9. I'm still not watching.
It's been since November 3rd at 6am, CST when I last watched my cable news networks, excepting CSPAN - and even that was for less than 10 minutes. I can't stomach it all.. seeing Falwell and Dobson on TV constantly makes me want to vomit.

I'm not a large man, but to paraphrase Peter Griffin, "They can kiss the fattest part of my ass!"

11. Just a few sources for me now:
DU and links;
The News Hour w/ Jim Lehrer
BBC World News
NPR (sometimes)
CNN International

I have felt so much better not watching CNN or NBC or ABC. I still like Dan Rather, but I've decided that thirty minutes is usually too brief to do the news justice.

Why not just send donations to the RNC if you still have cable?

17. corrected link
http://members.freespeech.org/fstv/

However, there is a small bit of good stuff available via satellite (not cable) and more precisely Dish Network, since Murdoch/DirectTV does not carry FSTV. Link TV http://www.worldlinktv.org/ (on both) is another good resource, but neither are on cable.

But remember you can get both (and more) via the net is you have broadband, and the price of cable (or satellite) plus dial-up is more than the price of broadband, which brings both services (plus telephone for a small surcharge)) if you go this route.

16. i haven't watched cable news for months now. can't remember
when i went cold turkey (sometime in late spring/early summer). but i have not had any withdrawals. in fact, it has kept me sane and positive. when people around me freak out because of the news on tv, i calm them down by telling them what i read here on DU. it works everytime. the "media" is insidious in its prime objective: to scare, discourage, disinform, and divert attention. and they are pretty effective at what they do.

18. We only get CNN International - I used to watch Larry King
but it seems to be all Scott Pederson, Martha Stewart, you know, faux news shit! So, since the election I've pretty much turned it off and watch some of the German news.

Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 02:23 AM by Hardhead
I don't miss any of it. For deluxe cable and cable-modem I was paying $120 a month. 300 channels of absolute shit. I cut it off and bought myself a DU star, and I don't miss the rotten shit. I pity those who are still hooked to their imbecilic umbilical.

23. No cable or network news since the election
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 02:35 AM by Valkyrie55
I did break down and watch Arafat's funeral on C-Span. I find I'm able to get all the news I need here at DU so why should I cause myself pain by giving cable news any more of my time?

25. Gave it up in late summer, cable anyway.
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 02:46 AM by proudbluestater
Couldn't take it anymore, it was not healthy to watch and get aggravated every day, hour after hour.

I watched a little Dan Rather in the fall, but that was it.

Immediately after the election I went from 120 channels down to 60 on Dish, specifically so I could kiss off Faux and MSNBC. Told them that on the phone as I canceled, too. My small protest.

I have gone almost completely off network/cable tv all the time now. I will watch my Dish Network because it has Free Speech TV and LINK TV both of which carry Democracy Now the REAL news. Neither network has corporate sponsors. They are both funded by "people like you," unlike PBS which has corporate sponsorships.

I don't miss it. I have HBO which I watch for things like the Laramie Project, Bill Maher, various movies. Other than that and, Free Speech and LINK, I'm just not watching tv anymore.

27. Amen to that!
Since the charade of election coverage, I've simply surfed on by.
I even broke my addiction to NPR, prefering jazz.
And I'm sleeping much better, and am in a more peaceful frame of mind. Denial.... whom, not me!
