News from the Groups: BND carols by Tony Beres (PDF)

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26 2004 IS BUY NOTHING DAY

For 24 hours, millions of people around the world do not participate -- in the doomsday economy, the marketing mind-games, and the frantic consumer-binge that's become our culture. We pause. We make a small choice not to shop. We shrink our footprint and gain some calm. Together we say to Exxon, Nike, Coke and the rest: enough is enough. And we help build this movement to rethink our unsustainable course.

In its 13 years, BND has become a flashpoint, a day when people of all stripes come together in symbolic protest. Visit the new BND Action Pyramid for a sample of great ways to celebrate.

2. Could you also post this here:

I remember hearing about "buy nothing day" on the PBS show "Affluenza". Great idea, and I'll certainly be "buying nothing"!

6. Jen6, I tried to post there, but I am not yet a donor! Sorry!

I gave this week to the blackboxvoting and also Free Speech TV and I'm tapped out for now. You can certainly post it there if you like, though! Or anybody that has donated is welcome to do it!!

I didn't even know they had an economic forum on DU. This place is HUGE. I'm new, but already it feels like HOME to me! I love it!!

Oh, just tonight on LINK TV on Dish Network they played Affluenza. Great show! Prior to that they did an hour long special on legalized prostitution in the Netherlands. It's like old-time tv where you might get a glimpse into other parts of the world. Something the nets are too cheap to do anymore nowdays.

4. Actually, after tomorrow's produce run, we will buy nothing for 50 days.
We don't do the Xmas thing. We don't celebrate genocide of any sort. (No Thanksgiving, no St. Patricks.) And we wanna bring on the collapse a little faster if we can by refusing to spend.

So after I go buy cold storage acceptable vegetables and fruit and lettuce seeds tomorrow, we will not buy anything until after Xmas.

It's not easy, but it's worth it.

7. How spartan of you.
A great noble boycott designed to crush small, struggling merchants.

Well, perhaps I'll admire it tomorrow.

11. No, it's not designed to crush small, struggling merchants
Wal-mart, Home Depot, and some of the giant, repug donating corporations are already doing that, by plan and design. The small, struggling merchants are not the ultimate target of economic boycotts and will be helped by our efforts in the long run.

I'm spending little as it is. Just paying off debt, we're heading for a depression as it is.
