In a nut shell, here is why the ultra RW will die a slow death...
Their ability to alienate everyone except the ultra rightwing nuts will be their complete undoing. They are now setting up divisions within the republican party.

Here is an excerpt from a Dallas news paper and the link. If you want to read the whole thing, it's free to join, just fill out the usual crap.

The elephant in the room: GOP schism
Many moderates say they no longer feel invited to the party

A win doesn't mean that all is well in the Republican Party.

Though their candidate came out ahead on Nov. 2, some moderate Republicans are as despondent as Democrats. While Christian conservatives have been credited with turning out like-minded voters in crucial swing states, many moderates say they have been marginalized.

"There is no future for moderate and progressive Republicans in the Republican Party," said Jim Scarantino, president of the centrist GOP group Mainstream 2004. "The far right wing and the fanatics have seized control."

"If they can't agree and support the president and the platform, then they ought to go over to the Democrats," said Jan LaRue, chief counsel for the conservative group Concerned Women for America.

1. Don't trust the moderates, Yet.
At this point in time the moderate Republicans in Congress cannot be trusted to do what's right for the country. They have shown more often then not, that their loyalty is to the president and the party first, and to the country second.

There are enough moderate Republicans to make a difference when it comes to judges, and even cabinet nominations, but I don't see many of them going against any of Bush's selections.

So until there is an uprising of Rebuplican moderates against the party, I won't hold my breath, and neither should anyone else.

2. Martial Law will make it easier...
If that's there last option, they'll make sure to "arrange" things to make it happen...

3. I agree with the implications
Although the split of Moderates vs. Hardliners may be overly simplistic. I think there are several splits in the party, including splits between Christian and Libertarian conservatives, and Isolationist and Imperialist conservatives. The splits are mostly kept under the table for now, but they are growing.
