Name something you think will happen soon, but people won't believe
I have some reasonable people in my family who don't yet fully appreciate the extent that our government and media are compromised.

If I'd said to them in early 2001: We will soon condone torture against prisoners of war

OR We will soon condone our country setting up a system in international gulags where prisoners will be held with no legal rights

OR We will invade a country based on lies, but the media won't care.

They would have said, "No way, quit being so delusional."

Now, when I say these things, they just sort of take it in stride, because the goalposts for our reality has changed.

What predictions for what is to come are reasonable today? I'd like to have them on record stating that such-and-such is inconceivable, so that when it does happen, they will finally have to admit that we are crossing lines to a degree and at a rate almost unbelievable to just a few years ago.

Any ideas?

There will be sanctions against us by the rest of the world.

We will use a nuclear weapon somewhere.

The dollar will collapse.

11. I would not be surprised if we use a nuke somewhere
A "battlefield nuke" or "bunker buster." I've been afraid of this happening in a second Bush administration for awhile. I'm sure alot of the more extreme hawks have raging hard-ons for the idea, and I don't think Chimpy would even blink from showing how "decisive" he is at fighting terra.

And I don't know if alot of the people who voted for him would even care. And I'd like to be able to say there wouldn't be anyone at my work playing the CNN video clip of the mushroom cloud on their computers and thinking it was cool, but I can't say that.

87. They don't care already about the depleted uranium
that's been used in Iraq. Thinking of that as a cumulative nuclear bomb doesn't compute.

As our soldiers come home on rotation and radiation sickness sets in, Iraqi babies are hideously malformed, and God only knows what else...we'll cut funding to the "VA entitlements" and throw the ungrateful terrorists geographically located in the Middle East into a 'democracy' highlighting 'personal responsibility'.

The world's going to be a much brighter place! Freedom is on the march! :puke:

We're leaving radioactive material all over Iraq and Afghanistan, and even our own troops are suffering from radiation sickness.

I think that we're already using nukes.

74. If you are incinerated in a nuclear blast
You're cremated and you are gone. Radiation poisoning and DU poisoning are the gifts that keep on giving, even generationally. Even though a nuclear explosion is profoundly more viscerally terrifying, it's really not very different from the Dresden bombings if you are "lucky" enough to be close to ground zero. But the lingering radiation effects are the true horror. That and the nuclear winter scenario in larger scale attacks.

21. I'd have to agree with the Sanctions..
I'm fully expecting the U.N. to put sanctions on the United States. With members of the U.N. and foreign media declaring this administration's policies as "War Crimes", I see sanctions as the next action the world takes against this administration. This is just an undeniable prospect we're faced with now.

I also suspect a major terrorist attack to take place within the next few months. Our administration is in disarray with cabinet members resigning and our intelligence community is in disarray with restructuring of the command and the purging of agents. Wouldn't this look like prime time for an attack if you were a terrorist?

3. We will soon be a 3rd-world country
Consider:

*) our election system is disfunctional
*) our power-grid is deteriorating
*) our health-care system is imploding
*) the dollar is falling
*) we're suffering from brain-drain in the sciences and engineering

Most importantly, we're not doing *anything* to fix any of these problems, and so they will continue to get worse.

No doubt, I've forgotten some other "3rd-world" trends, feel free to add.

5. OK, I have some for which I have been roundly criticized...
1)China will invade and retake Taiwan, and the US won't do anything about it, because they won't be able to.
2) The EU and Russia, and possibly China, will form an alliance to counter US imperialism.
3) The UN will pack up and leave US soil, in the smartest move to date. They will also dissolve the permanenet membership of the security council.
4) The EU and its allies will impose economic sanctions on the US for crimes against humanity.
5) Last, but certainly not least, the oil producers of the world will switch to the Eurodollar, and walk away laughing.

17. Interesting. Hope you don't mind if I comment.
1) Very possible. My question is, would the US have done anything about it anyway? The only American politician in recent memory that I can remember standing up for Taiwan is (believe it or not) Jesse Helms. The others all seem to have been distracted into looking the other way by the words "emerging markets" and the clink of piles of cash. Wal-Mart's entire business model is based on the ability to import unlimited boatloads of cheap plastic crap from China; they'd take a dim view of our starting a war over Taiwan regardless of who was President.

2) Vladmir Putin knows that Bush is his soul-mate. The two have struck a devil's bargain: Putin will publicly kiss Bush's ass and give him a free hand in the Middle East, and Bush will publicly excuse Putin's dismantling of Russian democracy (and give him a free hand in Chechnya.) The EU, on the other hand, is already frightened of the USA and that situation can only get worse over the next four years.

3) Not as long as the US still holds a seat on the Security Council and can veto any action they don't like. More likely that the various countries that the US has pissed off will seek to strengthen and expand other international organizations that don't include the US. This is already happening with the EU, as you noted.

4) The EU is too politic to do that unless we REALLY start getting nasty in Iraq. More likely that countries that trade with us will simply start to do less business with us and more business with each other without making any big pronouncements. The fact that our dollar will soon be on par with the Toilet Paper Sheet will speed this process along. After all, we no longer make anything that other countries would find worth buying... and when our dollar has tanked, we won't be able to afford any of their stuff.

5) Yes, especially with the dollar in freefall and the Saudi people increasingly outraged over the Saudi royal family's close relationship with the USA. In the end, the Saudis will choose their own skins over the Bush administration. That will be a big economic disaster for us and a black eye for Bush. Can't see how he'll get away with blaming Clinton for this one.

86. well, I think some of those are quite likely
I can tell you that EU and Russia and others are having plenty of backroom meetings about how to deal with USA Hegemony.

U.N. should set up in Israel. When diplomats from hundreds of nations are being shot at....they might suddenly resolve the mideast troubles.

Taiwan/China thing? Very very possible. CHina is merely biding it's time to give a hostile takeover bid to Taipei. If Taipei refuses overtures....they will be overwhelmed by Chinese military force and the thing will be over in less than a week.

With the placid media and control of nearly every aspect of government (including the CIA), unlike Spain, they might just pull it off.

and some repub Congressman or Senator from Minnesota was going on and on about the UN/Iraqi Oil for Food scandal and how much of a scam it was. He insinuated that Kofi Annan was personally involved in profiting from the graft of Saddam Hussein.

Look for the American MSM to start hammering on the corruption of the UN and how the pundits will stress that our "Moral Values" will no longer permit such an organization to exist within our society - the UN will be INVITED to shift the bulk of its operations to offices outside this country. How soon will this happen? I say, within the next 2 years, before the mid-term elections in '06.

Also, I think we'll be pre-emptively invading Iraq or Syria within the next year. Probably Syria first since they don't have nukes.

The future does not look rosy.

85. The blame...
rests not on the red states or the blue states. The blame would first and foremost rest on those who would commit such an act. And second, on the United States government (both Republican and Democratic administrations), for its conduct in the world for many, many years. Especially since World War Two.

I think a more likely scenario would be that the CIA/FBI anti-terrorism units discover and stop a nuclear device from being detonated just in the nick of time. No death. No physical destruction. But plenty of fear and propaganda. No actual bomb necessary. No terrorists needed. Simple, yet effective.

Although I agree that the possibility of a nuclear detonation occurring in the continental US is all too real, I think a chemical or biological attack would be more likely.

25. Collapse of the Dollar. Euro takes its place
in denominating oil for China, Iran, and, of course, Europe...and add Venezuela.

Staggering inflation in America and lots of instablity as other nations are less willing to finance our deficit as a form of economic warfare as America makes noises about attacking other nations and as the military gets lots of recruits from unemployed young people.

...this is where the nightmare gets to be too much for me to really contemplate, while, at the same time, I'm afraid this could happen....

China and Iran (where China gets lots of oil) enter into a pact that would include a Chinese attack on America if the U.S. attacks Iran.

A terrorist attack in America, which America blames on Iran. Blue states blame red states because of Bush policy and real talk of secession/explusion begins.

America attacks Iran, in spite of global opposition (BushCo will do this unilaterally, and maybe with nukes).

...and that's when America gets invaded by another nation.

52. Sad but true.
The illusion of Democracy is slowly dissolving; it's apparent to those who have been paying attention - but to your average American, it's going to take much more than "a bunch of hysterical liberals interpreting the Patriot Act as the death of the Constitution" to wake them up to the fact that their rights, in fact, are being systemically destroyed before their very eyes.

Unfortunately, most people will continue to live as the status quo dictates, and will only understand the danger that their basic freedoms are in when it threatens to directly affect them. By then, it will be much too late to effect change.

35. Tracking chips in your passport and more....
The government will put a tracking chip in your passport, so that a satellite could locate it.

The borders will get shut down so that very few people can leave or enter the USA. If you owe taxes or have an unpaid parking ticket, you will not be allowed to leave the country.

Identity papers will be required when buying a train, boat, or plane ticket. . .or whenever a cop requires it.

The FCC will declare that Internet is government property and anti-administration bloggers and such will get hunted down and shut down.

The FCC will consolidate the media further still until we have no dissenting news channels.

There will be fewer middle class - we will have a few rich and mucho poor, like in Soylent Green.

Wal-Mart and other mega-corporations will be the only stores in town. Robots and other automation solutions will take over most of the jobs.

Abortion will become illegal, as will the sale of most forms of contracepion (as Viagra and Levitra sales sky-rocket). Back-alley abortions will kill and maim thousands. Hundreds of thousands will end up with unwanted children.

Even more draconian drug laws will get passed and the prison population will grow even more quickly. The children of the inmates will become wards of the state and will be raised to work in the prison system or in law enforcement. Eventually most of the rural areas will be devoted to prison farms.

The police/CIA/miltary will have legal jurisdiction over U.S. citizens and will control any anti-administration demonstrations with hypersound technology. All electronic circuitry will be tracked and monitored.

Each U.S. citizen will have a file on them, complete with all their purchases, medical history, education, travel patterns, and police record. Every traffic light in the country will double as a surveillance camera that feeds the data into centralized depositories for pattern filtering and analysis.

There will be no more so-called human rights. We will be so overpopulated that the government and insurance companies will actually reward the food makers and suppliers for shortening our life spans.

Children will be taught to snitch on each other for unpatriotic and dissenting behavior. Books will be banned and artwork destroyed in the name of morality. Television will broadcast only happy, sappy movies and Jeff Foxworthy and Reba re-runs.

Social Security will become bankrupt. Millions of the poor, sick, and elderly will lose their homes. Shanty towns will mushroom. Disease epidemics will run rampant. Black markets will blossom.

Water will become increasing expensive and polluted and in many areas drinking water will be unavailable. Poorer nations will wage wars over water.

Overirrigation will create deserts where none were. Once thriving areas will die as a result, leaving millions hungry and homeless.

Cattle will no longer be economically viable as a food source and cloning will be used to create meat and other proteins to feed the masses.

Genetically engineered crops will supplant natural strains, creating pollution problems, killing viable farmland, and putting the world's farmers at Monsanto's mercy.

There will be no more fish in the sea (did you know the Bush family was at fault for that too? google "menhaden" and "Bush" together). The entire food chain will break down quickly and the seas will become stagnant swamps into which industrial polluters will keep dumping their crap.

Entire countries in Africa will be decimated by AIDS and other diseases. These areas will be taken over by mining corporations to do as they please.

I could go on, this has been so much fun! But I need to get some work done here!

The number of immigrants goes way down as refugees and economic immigrants seek more reasonable destinations.

The mass media will become even dumber than they are now, and in order to see quality TV you will have to go past the current digital cable and the premium movie channels and get super premium channels for an extra $50.00. Intelligent radio will be available only by satellite--on their extra premium services.

42. one word.. Africa
On the pretense of protecting countries in Africa from terrorism, and helping them combat aids, we will begin our imperial march and foothold across the continent to control their newly discovered reserves of oil-

by the way, already happening...

“The commander of U.S. forces in Europe, Gen. Jones, met President Mbeki on Friday for talks on America’s new security strategy in Africa to combat terrorism, according to military officials. ‘Africa is the logical place to be concerned about,’ Gen. Jones told local television after the meeting. The United States sees Africa as a soft target for terror networks due to weak institutions, poor security and policing and long stretches of unguarded coastline. Gen. Jones has been touring Africa both in his capacity as EUCOM commander and as (SACEUR).” The dispatch also quoted the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria saying in a statement that Gen. Jones’ visit and earlier ones to Morocco and Nigeria were significant “as the U.S. military and NATO are assessing the increasing strategic importance of the African continent.”

NAIROBI - New evidence of possible oil reserves in East Africa, stretching from Madagascar to the tip of Somalia, has prompted several major oil exploration companies to begin drilling in the region. East African governments are eagerly cooperating with the companies, expecting to share in future oil revenues that could significantly boost their impoverished economies. But critics say there is also much potential for the oil money to add to corruption in the region, and make the countries even poorer.

Sound familiar?

Any dissenters or radicals that become too visible like MLK will have any trumped up charges thrown at them and they will be arrested, or they might be taken care of in other ways. I think what they did to Scott Ritter was only a beginning. Look for more of this and these selective character assassinations, arrests and accidents will become bolder and more frequent.

53. Yeah,
I'm just waiting for the event which will be used to incriminate liberals and Democrats as "domestic terrorists." You know it's coming - this administration can only function in a vacuum, free from scrutiny and criticism.

Columnists will be threatened when they express anything that disagrees with the groupthink of the Empire - anything that is one notch left of "fascist."

The vibrancy of the internet will be stultified; connections will be monitored and regulated for any information which might be considered subversive or anti-government.

Academia will be condemned for its promotion of free thought; ignorance and instant gratification will be encouraged through marketing and culture, and intelligence shunned.

Most of it is happening now, and no it's not a coincidence.

56. Something nobody's even considered, including me...
Hm, no, really, let's see:

I could imagine any of the above with varying degrees of probability (the one about Kerry taking office around the bottom percentile, sadly)

Perhaps a series of events that leads to Bush either resigning or being dragged out on his ass. Perhaps something like he's caught sticking coke up his nose, admitting to having known about the terrorists before 9/11 and not giving a shit, or boinking Condi?

any of the above combined with he pulls an Anna Nicole Smith on camera, so clearly wasted that there's absolutely no way to spin it otherwise.

Or: he becomes the first president to be assassinated by an *inside* job, (I mean, a clearly inside job, in the style of Caesar or one of the other Romans he so clearly aspires to be).

Uhh...

Jesus really does return in a cloud of glory; He basically tells us how badly most of the so-called Christians have screwed up His message and ascends right back to heaven, alone, and thoroughly disgusted.

Mars really does attack!

Most improbable scenario of all, to me, right now:

The world continues to spin on its axis for the next four years; George W. makes a far worse mess but somehow manages to not get *everyone* killed or impoverished, and actually leaves office when he's supposed to. and a Democrat wins the '08 election in a relatively smooth process.

bush and the gang will hit us with another terror attack blame it on syria or Iran then we will be at war with them as well. North korea and china will attack south korea and basically take over the whole country. bush will declare martial law and imprison those who speak out. All 18 to 30 year olds will be drafted then it comes the bad part.

Ok a bit exagerated but I think we will get hit with some kind of attack within two years. War with Iran is coming soon to a theater near you (ok bad pun). Iraq will be overrun and we will be forced to withdraw to send people to the Iran quagmire.

59. Gun control will eventually be TIGHTER under the Repubs
I really believe this will happen sooner or later. The more our liberties are infringed upon, the more freedoms we lose, the less they are going to want an armed populace. I have put forth this theory to other gun owning Democrats and while most think I'm nuts (and rightly so but that's another story) I wouldn't be surprised if that eventually came to pass.

Of course, I know that much of their support comes from the NRA and gun toting extremists BUT I think that if they continue to control both houses of Congress and the Supreme Court, they will be less receptive to anyone's desires beyond their own narrow agenda. I really think this is plausible and could even be manipulated as an effort to "reach out" to the opposition while still getting exactly what they wanted.

Money makes the world go round...the world go round...

There are cures for most of the cancers out there but they won't releas them cause think of what they would do with all those people not donating to FIND THE CURE...there is alot of money to be made by keeping people ill...

There has been and engine that runs on water ...but the big oil companies/Car makers have shelved it and other proto types that could save energy and make OIL OBSOLITE for use in vehicles and such...

Think of what that would do to all the people out there working for those big paychecks and profits....the economy of the world revolves around keeping the small under the thumb of the large...

Everything in your daily lives is decided by someone else..not you.
but you are made to think that you have a voice...which you do..its just that untill something big moves you, you go on as usual and say little..and what is said can be made to be quite...fear motivates as you all are aware...look at the Bush Stolen Election.

Someone decides what is in style and what you should wear and what colors....as they decide all the things in life..they keep you poor enough and starved enough so you will follow like good little boys and girls...

No one wants to give up what they have to make the rest more comfortable..I mean really..there should be no starving people, no clothless person, no person without a home or shelter..

MONEY RULES ALL - get used to it...

IF not you may get a knock on the door in the middle of the night or maybe just your brake lines will be cut..BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING AND IF HE DOESN'T LIKE WHAT HE SEES..HE ACTS ON IT..BIG TIME.

71. Actually I can see it pretty clearly
I see people getting arrested for ever having been on sites like this, and trialed in a mcarthyian sense, jailed, and some put to death for being "anti-american" in not agreeing with the American government.

I see people with any history of supporting gay rights being tried as satanic. I see people with tatoos being tried as santanic for their markings. I see people who were ever in prison being re-tried and put away, or put to death as not acceptable members of this society.

I see a huge backlash coming against single mothers, divorced women, gays, all ethnicities but white, and all religions but Extreme right wing christianity. I see people standing up and speaking against all of the said people loudly, and publically.

I see the end of free speech, and the press. Buying books will come with a government security check and possible arrests for attempting to buy free thought books on the internet. Visiting websites will also be illegal and bring on fines and imprisonment.

And I see the people supporting all of this, for "goodness of society" and their safty.

I agree--if not an outright recriminalization, then at least some rolling back of the progress GLBT rights have made in this country. I also think that we'll see a rise in gay-bashing incidents over the next year or so, considering that homophobes have just recieved a 'mandate' stating, basically, that it's OK to hate the gay.

76. Hmm...
That the United States trade policy was massive devaluation of the American dollar to boost foreign trade (which judging by the record trade debt didn't work). The United States has been driving up a massive home debt by cutting taxes, increasing spending and having a flat economy (which help stimulate the economy into stagnation). The United States dropped interest rates to all time lows to encourage it's citizens to spend. (Which worked Americans drove the home market to record profits and prices at the same time encouraging Americans to take on amazing levels of personal debt. Debt which many will never payoff in their life time.)

Given that I would say any recession in the next 4 years could pretty much finish off the US economy. As it is runaway inflation is the key word for Bush II.

Support for this will be given under two guises: to change the Constitution so that foreign born people can be President (think Arnold) and an amendment to ban gay marriage.

Once a Constitutional Conevention is convened, don't look for the Right to stop at just those two issues. They'll write into the Constitution the changes theve been salivating at over the years. Keep in mind that the exact format of a Constitutional Convention is open to interpretation. The Right will take great liberties to get what they want.

92. things will move fast
People talk about 2008 with a glib self assurance that they can predict and plan that far ahead. I am not planning on anything being predictable in January, let alone years from now.

A lot hinges on how hard people fight the election theft. With a hard and uncompromising fight, the entire fascist coalition of neo-cons and Dominionist Christians could come crashing down in the next few months, and by spring we could be drinking in the pure sweet air of freedom again. I think people have forgotten what that is like, as the noose has slowly tightened on us and we have become gradually accustomed to living a hellish existence.

If we don't fight the election theft, then I predict massive police state repression by March at the latest. The degree to which people resist this will be the degree to which it is brutal.

Their funding and activities will be subject to strict monitoring by government and they will be liable to pay damages to corporations and the government for any lawsuits they file on behalf of the environment or the people.
