Dear Friend and Supporter,
Media bias is an issue that continues to need addressing. How do we ensure that all sides of an issue are being presented in a fair and balanced fashion? (Hint: slogans are not enough.)
The right wing continues to insist that our news sources, both on television and radio, are liberally slanted. In actuality Americans are seeing and hearing less and less of any other viewpoint other than a conservative viewpoint represented in mass media. This is a decline that has been in progress since 1987 when the Fairness Doctrine was abolished. Since then, the country has experienced a proliferation of highly partisan news outlets like Fox News that disseminate opinion often disguised as news..
Democracy is built on the idea that the views, beliefs, and values of an informed citizenry provide the best basis for political decision-making.
http://www.fairnessdoctrine.comAmerican listeners and viewers agree. A recent poll of likely voters shows overwhelming support among progressives and conservatives alike for restoring rules requiring fairness and balance on our nation's airwaves. By signing this petition, you have said to Congress and the FCC that it's time for a change. Now we need your help reaching other like minded Americans so that they can engage in this very important issue.
Please forward this email to your friends, family and neighbors and ask them to sign the petition in support of reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. With this rule in place, situations like what recently occurred with Sinclair Broadcasting on our airwaves will no longer happen.
http://www.fairnessdoctrine.comThe Fairness Doctrine is not about ignoring or hiding information, and it is not about suppressing free speech. It is simply about giving each and every citizen an equal chance to hear all the facts and decide for themselves. Don't let the right wing tell you what to think. Listen. Learn. Make up your own mind.
I'm sure you know people with strong opinions - forward this email to them. Ask them to support the renewal of the Fairness Doctrine to ensure that all points of view are represented - including theirs. Diversity of opinion is what America is all about. Let's make sure that our nation's airwaves support that diversity and never stifle it.
