McCain tries to recapture his soul
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/16/politics/16mccain.html?ei=5006&en=697419afe13e6a1c&ex=1101272400&partner=ALTAVISTA1&pagewanted=print&position=

Wasting no time distancing himself from President Bush on an issue that has long divided them, Senator John McCain yesterday called the White House stance on climate change "terribly disappointing" and said inaction in the face of mounting scientific data was unjustified.

Two weeks after the end of a campaign in which he stumped for Mr. Bush's re-election, Mr. McCain, Republican of Arizona, is convening a Senate hearing today on the human effect on climate and what to do about it.

Mr. Bush, citing the cost to the economy and what the administration describes as the uncertainty of the science, has opposed restrictions on carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases since early 2001, when he abandoned a pledge he made in his first presidential campaign to restrict carbon dioxide from power plants.

In contrast, for three years Mr. McCain has pushed for a bill he wrote with Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, that would create the first, modest curbs on greenhouse gases.

hmmmmmmmm.. so Mr. Populist, Good-guy Maverick-McCain is back, striking out against the DEVIL he worked his tail off to elect. He worked tirelessly to install a person whose anti-science policies threaten our planet, and now he has swung back to the side of science and reason. While I cheer all voices of opposition to this White House of Horrors, isn't it just too little too late, coming from a man who put politics before policy and probably influenced a number of moderate Republicans and 'soft' Democrats to vote B*sh.

I for one can't stand Mccain anymore. I used to admire him. The vile Swift Boat Vet smear should have sent him running to fellow-vet Kerry's side, instead of forming alliances with those filthy bastards.

8. I hope that at some point...
McCain starts waking up at night. Screaming. and that these spells have nothing to do with his war experiences, thus making them all the more fresh and painful.

It could be hard to watch a man go from budding giant to sad little man, but in McCain's case, I feel nothing but satisfaction.

13. I also once held Senator McCain in high esteem
i even worked on his campaign in 99, i wrote his name in on my ballot in 2000. I wish now i could take it all back. I cannot tell you how saddened i am by his actions over the past 2 years.

14. Why isn't McCain screaming about the Marine killing that Iraqi?
If the Viet Cong had taken the same course, McCain wouldn't even be here. I'm in no way jumping on the Marine; I have a nephew over there, and I'm not so sure what I would do in the same situation, but McCain really should say something about it (maybe he has and I missed it).
