Lend Your PC Power to Researchers
What if the power of the world's 650 million PCs could be harnessed and focused on humanity's most pressing issues? World Community Grid does just that.

You simply download a free, small software program onto your computer. In just minutes, you’ll be ready to go. Whenever your computer is idle, you can join others to send unused cycle time to World Community Grid – which will combine all that donated computer power and use it for humanitarian purposes.

Projects address humanitarian issues

The first World Community Grid initiative is the Human Proteome Folding Project, which will help scientists develop solutions that address global issues such as cures for HIV/AIDS, SARS, and malaria. Later projects could include predicting natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods, or improving the safety of the world's water supply.

Here’s how to participate:

Install the software from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org

World Community Grid 11/17/2004 2:34 PM
The World Community Grid project seeks to harvest idle computing cycles from personal and corporate PCs for use by scientists and researchers worldwide to addresses humanitarian problems. It was announced today by IBM's chairman, Sam Palmisano.

As you may know, today's scientific challenges, whether they pertain to medical, meteorological, or ecological research, often require tremendous amounts of computing power to deliver results. Scientists around the globe do not always have access to such power, or the magnitude of the study would require months to complete. By aggregating the spare cycles from volunteers around the world, the research can be expedited significantly, enabling more ambitious research projects and more timely results.

All projects that will utilize the grid must be strictly humanitarian in nature, and cannot be associated with profit-oriented enterprises.

The agent will run unobtrusively on your desktop, and will periodically use your internet connection to return results and
retrieve new chunks of work. It should not interfere with your use of the computer at all.
