O'REILLY Didn't Get Suspended for the "W" Word (Wetback), Another Just Did
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 11:01 AM by UTUSN
(On Edit: Re-titled away from rhetorical question to avoid any impressions that I might be naively expecting otherwise.)

No link, but O'WHORELY used it sometime during the ESTRADA period. The Hispanic organizations were already tied up with opposing ESTRADA, so their protests over Bill-O were perfunctory and soon over. I don't remember whether he apologized.

But now, in the post-loofah/fallafel era, being fair to him (which he doesn't deserve), it appears that he might have misspoken, substituted one word, nonsensically, for another. He was talking about SMUGGLERS of illegals, who are called "coyotes," and said "wetbacks". I'll Google "O'Reilly wetbacks", mainly because its such a fun concept. But seriously, is there some brain damage, perhaps from alcohol, that would result in these word glitches?

Mark Belling returned to his afternoon radio talk show Monday with a "Buenos dias," after a weeklong hiatus sparked by reaction to his use of an ethnic slur to refer to illegal Mexican immigrants. ....

He did not immediately address the controversy that led to his suspension, but did tell a joke in which the punch line was Vice President Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter. He said the joke was aimed at testing how long a leash he will now have at his station, WISN-AM (1130). He also joked that he would welcome pickets at the station if they were waitresses from Hooters.

But in his last hour, Belling got serious and discussed what he termed "the event." He said he has formally apologized for his offending remark and his initial mishandling of reaction to it, and realizes he offended some. But there are "deliberate attempts to use the situation to silence me," he said, referring a drive to get him off the air permanently.

Belling's use of the term "wetback" on Oct. 27 and his subsequent sarcastic apologies led to protests by Latinos. Three businesses dropped advertising on the show, and efforts continue to have him fired. ....

Link #2 is a virtual treasury of his racist slurs on all fronts.

In this transcript O'Reilly calls mexicans wetbacks, for the record he never said he was sorry for using the term wetback in referring to mexicans. He just ignored all the e-mails and the hispanic groups who demanded an apology. A few days after he said it, he gave a bogus quote to the NY Times, but only after they called him and asked about it. He said it was a mistake, he meant to say coyote, but he never said he was sorry for saying it. How many non-racists refer to mexicans as wetbacks when they meant coyote ? My guess would be none. ....

In April 2003, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly hosted a fundraiser for Best Friends, a charity benefiting inner-city schoolchildren. As reported in the Washington Post (4/15/03), O'Reilly was trying to fill the time before a singing group connected with the charity, called the Best Men, was set to perform, and quipped: "Does anyone know where the Best Men are? I hope they're not in the parking lot stealing our hubcaps." ....

Two months before O'Reilly's "hubcaps" remark, he used a racist slur on the air. Searching for a word to describe someone who assists immigrants crossing the border, O'Reilly came up with "wetback" (2/6/03). The incident was explained away by Fox officials as an unfortunate gaffe (New York Times, 2/10/03), but the Allentown, Pa. Morning Call (1/5/03) had O'Reilly using the same racist term in a speech earlier in the year: "O'Reilly criticized the Immigration and Naturalization Service for not doing its job and not keeping out 'the wetbacks.'" O'Reilly denied making the comment (Washington Post, 2/17/02), but the reporter stands by his account. ....

2. Why is this so surprising?
That idiot could probably say the N word and Fox would just give him more airtime. Like Murdoch really cares?!

4. Never Said It Was Surprising. But What's on My Mind These Days
is the GONZALEZ nomination, which is attracting zero opposition, and this contrasts with the rare Dem victory over ESTRADA, with the support of Hispanic organizations. The fact that another media figure got in trouble RECENTLY and at least paid SOME kind of price makes it newsworthy.

But then, Tweety triggered a gun incident by putting words in Kathleen WILLEY's mouth over her mysterious jogger, where he was pressuring her on the air to name a name. She wouldn't, then HE did. And the person named was NOT the one. Then Pat BUCHANAN's mentally disabled brother took a weapon to the wrongly-named person's house. How come Tweety didn't get suspended, reprimanded, SOMETHING for this?

I understand that a conservative talk radio host is now testing the waters using the same word.

On edit, it wasn't Limbaugh.
