Who is Margaret Spellings?
Seriously, her bio on the WH web site is pretty sparse.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/government/spellings-bio.html

Did she go to college?

Has she ever worked for or been associated with a school or school district?

Has she ever run ANYTHING?

From the looks of this, her only experience is as a staffer for Shrub. I would say that this is getting ridiculous, but it's now beyond that.

1. The only thing I've heard
is that she has never won a school board race, but the source never claimed she actually ran. I believe it was either AAR (more likely) or NPR, but I'm not sure.

3. more on her
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2902848

Spellings began compiling that resume in high school when she took a job at the old Handy Andy store at Gessner and Westheimer to pay for a car in high school. She obtained her real estate license while attending UH as a political science major, then got her first political job with former Texas Gov. John Connally's failed presidential campaign in 1980.

Spellings became immersed in state public education issues in the early 1980s when she served as chief clerk for the House Public Education Committee. Bill Haley, now an Austin lobbyist, was chairman of the committee......

Spellings left the Capitol in 1988 to become a lobbyist for the Texas Association of School Boards. She worked on Bush's first gubernatorial campaign in 1994, and joined his staff as an education adviser after his election. It was there that she helped usher in the reforms that later spawned the federal No Child Left Behind law......

4. She was Margaret LaMontagne until about a year ago
http://slate.msn.com/id/2077046

then again, her bio as "Margaret LaMontagne" (maiden name) is pretty sparse, too:

On Dec. 4, Chatterbox identified Margaret LaMontagne as director of the Domestic Policy Council in the Bush White House. LaMontagne, Chatterbox observed, keeps "an amazingly low profile." When Chatterbox entered her name in the search engine for the White House Web site, he found only four entries for "Margaret LaMontagne." Chatterbox has since learned that LaMontagne got married a year ago and took her husband's last name, so now she's Margaret Spellings. But Margaret Spellings doesn't have a much higher profile than Margaret LaMontagne. The White House search engine coughs up seven entries for "Margaret Spellings."

The comparative invisibility of Margaret LaMontagne/Spellings lends credence to John DiIulio's notion, expressed in Ron Suskind's January Esquire piece, that what little domestic policy the Bush administration generates comes out of Karl Rove's hip pocket. (DiIulio has since disavowed the criticism, which came principally from an e-mail that DiIulio sent Suskind.) Now Chatterbox learns he was incorrect when he identified Margaret LaMontagne as director of the Domestic Policy Council. The Domestic Policy Council doesn't have a director!

Gee, thanks, Tim. Now I'll be thinking about stuff coming out of Karl Rove's hip pocket all day. :puke:

Her willingness to kiss Shrub's ass.

8. Who Were Ron PAIGE, Ann VENEMAN, Spencer ABRAHAMS?
Answer, that includes o.p. and Don EVANS: Non-entities who fill the empty spaces in Shrub's self-consuming Mal-administration. Btw, Spencer was literally asleep at the wheel during the big black-out. The cable yakkers had to keep running to former Energy Secty RICHARDSON, because ABRAHAMS was out of pocket. He later said he was in London, and because of the time difference, ASLEEP.

The lack of accomplishments in this group might just be the proof that all these Cabinet departments aren't needed at all. EVANS is Shrub's best friend, who was in the plane when Shrub almost killed them both, and is now headed back to Texas where he will probably take the governorship.

9. Here's something interesting: Married to Robert Spellings
Please correct me if I have this wrong: Our next Secretary of Education, aside from being profoundly unqualified for the position, is tied in with the whole TANG scandal. Amazing.

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2902848

"In 2001, Spellings married Robert Spellings, an attorney and lobbyist who has offices in Washington and Austin."

http://www.gardere.com/Attorneys/Attorney_Bio/?id=1212

-Chief of Staff under Texas Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes (1969-1973)
-Chief of Staff of the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives (1966-1968)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/campaigns/wh2000/stories/bush072899.htm

"An anonymous letter addressed to a U.S. attorney in Texas, produced in a discovery proceeding for an ongoing lawsuit, charged that Barnes assisted Bush in getting into the Guard. The suit was brought by the former director of the Texas Lottery Commission, who believes Barnes, now a lobbyist, may have played a role in his dismissal.

In a deposition for the suit, Kralj confirmed that he would get calls from Barnes or his chief of staff, Robert Spelling , "saying so-and-so is interested in getting in the Guard." Kralj said he would then forward the names to Gen. Rose.

10.  What are the odds of that? I guess Shrub pays his debts.
It would help explain why someone without even a bachelors degree in an education related field, no graduate degree in anything at all, and no school or classroom experience whatsoever, gets appointed the Secretary of Education of the United States.
