I have a feeling that a draft may be imminent...
Here's my reasoning: click here and here.

Why else is the government so desperate to have these people enlist? If a draft is near, what country or countries are we going to attack next?

Am I reading into this too much or are my concerns justified?

Maybe I should get ready to pack my bags to Canada...:scared:...or take off my tinfoil hat. :tinfoilhat:

3. Sorry, guys... But I really don't see how we could NOT have a draft...
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 06:36 PM by hlthe2b
That they are calling back guys who received their (final) discharge papers 10 years or more ago, is as blatant to me, at least, as initiating the draft. If they would do one thing, (which I can not believe to be legal), they clearly are both 1. desperate and 2. not worried about the consequences.

Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 07:31 PM by hlthe2b
if they fail to appear... I believe the story was on NPR a few days ago.

Note, these are not people who inactivated and were on "inactive reserve." These were guys who had fulfilled their active duty AND research commitments AND received their honorable discharges long ago.... Unbelievable

41. Is that even legal?
How can they do that? Unless a draft were already in place, I don't see how the military can do this. These people are being forced to re-join the military against their will, is what it sounds like to me. My own son who is 32 was medically discharged in '98 due to a knee injury. He served six years and one year in the Calif. National Guard. Will they be calling him back, I wonder?

18. I said this before...
But I will side with Congressman Rangel. A draft would be a good thing, in that it would force more middle class families to send their sons and daughters, and college won't be an excuse this time. I think it could serve to turn the tide against this war.

The only way you should be able to avoid being drafted is if you are a registered voter WITHOUT an "R" on your registration card.

If you didn't bother to vote, tough shit.
If you are a republican, off you go.

To the victor go the boils.

I'd like to think we are wrong, but
1. Bush has lied about nearly every policy promise made during the 2000
campaign--why would his 2004 promises be different now that he does not have to stand for reelection.
2. the mechanisms are all in place-
3. He can't saber rattle at N. Korea, Syria and Iran --because they know how overextended we are and this is a real problem for the Bushies, both on a practical and an EGO level.
4. He has little choice, short of a miracle happening....

Don't be too sure...
My son went to art school in NZ in 2002, and said it would be difficult to stay unless he was in school. Perhaps that has cahnged. He went to one of the anti-war protests in Aukland and said it was disturbingly more anti US than anti war.
But please keepus updated on what you hear. (he's 20) and a candidate for the draft having gotten a drft card in order to get a student loan.

But I will be willing to harbor draft dodgers in my home any day. I'm no Ann Frank, but we need to start thinking outside of the box.

thanks to a post here on DU a while back my wife signed up and she was accepted.

But..there won't be a draft anytime soon because among other things, there is no money to train draft board members. There may be appropriations made next year but the full board would not be ready until late next year.

Thanks to the fundies and neo-cons (and logical thinking), Christianity isn't my thing anymore.

47. I'm sorry Christianity isn't your thing anymore.
Some people call themselves "followers of Jesus" to distinguish themselves from these sorts of "Christians". If you read what Jesus said and did in the Gospels, you might arrive at a much different impression of what he was about than you hear from the fundies. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a fine example (Luke chapter 10:25-37).

You might look for a Quaker group or some liberal Episcopalians (or other liberal mainline denomination churches). Don't let the fundies define Christianity for you or take it away from you.

20. I think 35 is the upper age limit..
and some things that will disqualify you from getting drafted are: physical injury/injuries, mental problems, and MAYBE being a conscientious objector.

There may be other ways where you can get out of being drafted (college deferral isn't one of them anymore. :().

Bills have been in Congress since January 7, 2003, known as S89 and HR163 that would make it required for women to be drafted are currently stagnant in committees. A proposal from the SSS was also sent to Pentagon officials on February 11, 2003 proposing to have the draft age limit changed from 25 to 34 years of age and to also include females into the draft.
