Chirac questions US-led Iraq war - BBC
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4018325.stm

i dont know how many arguments ive had with ppl thats we are not safer becuase saddam sits in a cell...something the rest of the world already knows as a given.

--

French President Jacques Chirac says he is "not at all sure" the world has become safer with the removal from power of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

In a BBC interview, Mr Chirac suggested the situation in Iraq had helped to prompt an increase in terrorism.

The interview, aired on BBC Two's Newsnight programme on Wednesday, came ahead of his visit to the UK this week.

President Chirac also maintained that any intervention in Iraq should have been through the United Nations...

...He said he understood that Mr Bush would not change his mind on Iraq - but, he added, nor would France.

"This is not disrespect towards each other," he said. "We have two distinct analyses and we draw two different conclusions. History will tell who is wrong and who is right."

1. Chirac can kiss my ass...
When Kerry said he would attempt to bring more allies into our corner to help us out, Chirac screamed loudly that he would never send troops into Iraq. Ok, that's fine, but didn't he understand that it would serve to debunk Kerry's argument - couldn't he have waited until after the election? I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't have preferred to work with someone like John Kerry rather than Idiot Boy.

2. If he'd said he'd send troops if Kerry were elected, what would he say
if Bush had won? I won't send troops because Kerry didn't get elected? It's a sticky spot for a leader to be in. Also, why should he commit troops at all, given how unpopular the war is in France? His point is that the world is less safe because of the war. France is less safe because of the war, and it isn't even engaged in it. Would the situation improve for France if it had troops on the ground there?
