Poll question: How secure is your job from outsourcing/offshoring?
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 01:43 AM by UdoKier
How secure is your job from outsourcing/offshoring?

I would bet that the vast majority of Americans' jobs are NOT safe, and over the next 4 years, a lot MORE of us will be displaced, and forced to take jobs that pay half as much as today.

And as this shift continues, just WHO will have any money left to donate to moveon.org, or Kucinich, or whoever.

Not only are the right decimating the middle class, they are destroying our very political relevance by turning us all into vassals

I had no illusions that Kerry would reverse this trend, but I thought he might have slowed it down or ameliorated it somewhat. Now it will only accelerate.

The story that breaks my heart the most is the one where skilled American workers are forced to spend months TRAINING THEIR FOREIGN REPLACEMENTS before being let go. Talk about gall. :puke:

Those of us who work for a living are SO FUCKED.

Anyway,

How secure is your job from outsourcing/offshoring?

1. I'm a truck driver so I'm pretty secure
I am being affected by the econimic slow down, though. Starting the beginning of next year I will be working 5 days a week instead of 6 due to lack of business for the customer I haul for. It will be kind of nice having a 5 day work week, but I'm not going to be able to save like I have been.

6. My company already has programmers in two other countries.
So six months ago I started working toward starting up my own business. So far I'm about 40% of the way to making enough to live on. In another year I won't have to worry about getting canned. I'll be ready for it. I hope.

7. Well, considering what they pay teachers in America....
Good luck, anyway.

Food for thought:

Teachers' strike looms at Portland schools
When Portland Public Schools (PPS) and its teachers union entered mediation Jan. 7, a timetable was set for a showdown that could end in a teachers' strike as early as March 3.
...
For six months, the union bargaining team rejected a district proposal to reduce teacher pay 5 percent by cutting nine days out of the school year. In November, citing a worsening budget situation, the district upped its demand to 15 days (an 8 percent loss of pay).

MILWAUKEE-After a landmark concession by the Milwaukee teachers union to begin paying health care premiums, the union and administration are battling over how those contributions should be made.

DETROIT-Parents and other city residents were enraged Monday after Detroit Public Schools announced it will have to cut 4,000 jobs and close as many as 40 of the district's 255 schools due to the latest projected budget crisis.

Teachers feeling ‘gut-punched'
Teachers don't speak in a single voice, but most of them sound defeated. They've put up with pay cuts, pennies for supplies and students crammed in classrooms, but the public said schools don't need any more money.

"Punched in the gut" was how one teacher put it just days after the latest Bend-La Pine School District levy failed last week. Almost 63 percent of voters rejected the property tax measure.

Redbank teachers take to picket lines
NEW BETHLEHEM - Teachers took to the picket line Wednesday outside Redbank Valley High School on the opening day of the district's first-ever strike.
District administrators have canceled classes for more than 1,200 students during the strike, which could potentially last up to 20 days.
...
The two sides have been unable to settle on salaries and benefits.
....
The board on Tuesday had rejected a counter proposal for a four-year contract that featured salary increases of $2,400 per year per teacher and a switch to the Select Blue health plan or to have teachers pay the difference in the premium for the indemnity plan.
....
The teachers' proposal would result in a reduction of some $40,000 in costs to the district due to the insurance coverage switch, and the salary offer represented a decrease of nearly $800 per teacher, according to union officials.

...and it goes on. Nobody is immune.

10. I work for a small-town business and it is highly affected by (m)
the financial situations of the townspeople.

Its getting pretty bad. I almost lost the job but was able (PTL!) to negotiate for fewer hours instead.
