When will these jerks be satisfied? |
|
They have the whole government why are they still sending me these obnoxious e-mails? :grr:
Got a long diatribe from a wingnut acquaintence ranting about how we aren't a Democracy, we are a Republic - it perports to quote founding fathers and actually does quote Robert Welch, founder of John Birch society.
I know I should ignore it but if anybody knows the e-mail (I won't post it unless someone asks - you know the kind of crap it is) and has a Snopes like rebuttal handy I would sure appreciated it.
Its title is "A Republic, If You Can Keep It" by John F. McManus :puke:

1. Yes, we are supposed to be a "government of laws, not men". |
|
--that's what a republic is. (Or was, till this administration started ignoring laws it found inconvenient.)
Pure democracy would be "majority rule". We don't have that--in the sense that there are rights the minority retains that cannot be taken away by the majority. (Especially important to note when the voting "majority" in this country was 59 million people, and the "minority" was 56 million.) Our Constitution states this explicitly.

2. Yes I realize the fact of the structure |
|
but this essay twists it in a sickening way. I also googled the author - he's the CURRENT pres of the JBS. I just want something to send back to this guy that is factual and a little "in your face". I haven't finished Lakoff's book yet so I'm not ready to write on my own ;)

10. If 51% of the electorate can vote to ban gay marriage and overturn |
|
roe v wade etc. I would call that democracy at its worst. Seems like a real republic would stand up for the rights of the minority, especially if the constitution stands for equality before the law.

5. The Chinese have a "Republic", too. Iraq had one as well. |

We have a Democratic Republic.
What's the point of that argument, exactly? Is it just to belittle the word "Democrat"? Seems a little 3rd grade-ish to me, but I suppose that hasn't stopped them before.
