Being on the "far left" ... |
|
... in an extreme right-wing nation such as ours is not a bad thing. Just saying.

More and more the far left is pushing moderates and centrists away with political correct idealogical group-think and growing aggressive intolerance to all views other than their own.
This not only serves to swing the balance of power to the right by driving moderates away from the left, but also gives liberalism a bad name. There's a reason that "liberal" has become a four letter word is political circles, because it is most commonly associated with those folks on the far left who behave like the fascist fundamentalists on the far right when it comes to their political views.
Honestly... take video of PETA protesters and operation rescue protesters. Turn the sound off and the only way you can tell the two apart is the gory pictures they wave around are slightly different.
All this extremism and intolerance on the far left and far right is pushing all the reasonable people into the center. We're too embarrassed by the idiots to want to be part of either side.

5. I guess it depends on how |
|
a person defines "far left." I understand, and generally agree, with your point that there are some fanatics who are a disruptive force, and who are frequently referred to as the "far left."
But there are also people who are fairly well rooted in reality, and who reflect community values quite well, who are also on the "far left." My guess is that includes a number of people on DU.
Simply being a loud-mouthed ass does not really make a person representative of the far left. It is indeed an issue, however, because people like Sean Hannity are very good at projecting that image.

8. Terrible example. Try again. |

PETA are neither left nor right. They are animal-rights extremists. They enjoy little or no support on DU or from the Democratic party. The same could be said for ELF (another NON-left-right issue).

10. Animal rights has NOTHING to do with left/right paradigm |
|
... And I've met few animal rights freaks with a very broad consciousness of real left/right issues which are about wealth distribution, taxation, social welfare, and HUMAN rights.
PETA people -pfft. You're buying the Fox-Hannity-Limbaugh line.
How many democrat activists do you know like that? Those people are either disengaged or at best, Greens, but even Hitler loved his dogs and he was no left-winger.

7. Beats the hell out of being on the right, or their "moderate" apologists. |
|
And, you're aren't alone at all. Most of the world is on the "far left" by American standards.

I've been shocked in the past two years. Here in the UK I'm seen by the real "far left" as a dangerous wobbler, a capitalist apologist, a grey (that's a damning term in the UK left), a loose cannon, a centrist, and so on, because I do things like agree with the renationalisation of the railways, but not the phone companies. And because I think the trade unions had too much power in the 1970s. And that sort of thing.
The UK mainstream right sees me as a potential voter, but unlikely (they're right it's unlikely - more like never going to happen).
In the United States, I would be considered a deep-red political agitator and quasi-communist.
I'm not even a socialist, something that irritates my socialist friends no end.
Go figure, as you might say.

14. Moderation is getting harder to justify, |

much as I try. I feel pushed farther toward a radicalized stance, yet still hope for somekind of common ground.
Battle lines being drawn.
