36. I don't think so...
Too bad for Maher and stuff; I neither like him nor get HBO, though. I don't know why he became as "mainstream" as he did when there are much smarter, funnier, less assy political comedians out there. My impression is that Maher is not well regarded among that group, either.

*Some* good comedians are egotistical bastards, but the ones I've met, overwhelmingly, have been gracious and down-to-earth.

48. Say What, You Don't Have HBO?
And you've never seen one episode of Real Time w/ Bill Maher?

Your impression??? - Maher is not well regarded among his peers? Woah.. that's quite a statement, the many guests he's had on Real Time and on Politcal Incorrect, seem to like, he's always professional and gracious, unless things get sticky. Maybe they hate him, I don't know, you don't know, unless you're an industry insider, then do tell.

George Carlin, Lewis Black, Dave Chapelle, Margaret Cho, Janeane Garafalo, Whoopie Goldberg, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart deal with subjects that are tough. Warm and fuzzy they are not.

54. Before he was on HBO
I'd seen his stand-up and his other show (that I can't offhand remember the name of) that came before the HBO one. So that's where my personal opinion comes from.

My impression regarding his peers' opinion comes from chatting with other stand-ups comedians after shows when some of them hang out to chat with audience stragglers. My impression is not that his peers "hate him", but that he's generally considered -- to quote another political comedian -- "an asshole".

I don't doubt that he covers tough issues, and in general he's a voice for the left. My opinion of him is as a comedian/performer, and it's held since years before he got any TV deals. You seem to have read *way* more into my post than was actually there.

27. The right wing doesn't want competition
they want us to hear their propaganda and keep everything else off the air. I sure hope there are enough of us ready to cancel HBO and give them an important lesson. If they only want to cater to half the country then we can cut their dollars in half too! Guess we'll find out if the dollar speaks louder than political pressure.

42. It's only censorship when the government does it
Sometimes shows are cancelled because they just aren't getting high enough ratings (or are too expensive to produce). Maher hasn't really gotten in the news with anything that he has said recently, so ratings is a much more likely reason.

( him and six feet under)
but I guess I could awalys just get the whole season when they come out on dvd. and personly I don't care if the guy is a jackass out side of his show im never going to have lunch with him + he is a light in the dark on many issues that no one touches with a 10 foot pole with out fear of being axed. Also he makes the RW look exactaly the way they are in the inside by letting them hang them selves with there own actions and words.

Thanks so much for saving me some money. If Bill Maher is no longer on HBO then I no longer need HBO!

52. What about 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'
Larry David and his wife are big contibutors to progressive causes, plus the show is hysterical. I'm surprised HBO is caving. They have some pretty edgy programming and shouldn't have to answer to the censorship police, unless Repugs are cooking up some oversight on cable channels as well.:eyes:

55. Maher the hypocrite
On the October 29 episode of Real Time, Maher had Ann Coulter as his jumbo-tron guest. Richard Belzer was one of the members of his panel and he angrily described her as a "fascist party doll."

Maher defended Coulter saying that she was a friend of his. When she was leaving the screen, he told her that her hair looked nice and that he would see her next month. It was either on this episode or the previous one that he also said that she had a "rack." In an interview with a local newspaper, he said that she was fun to party with.

I read that Maher was being sued by Coco Johnson, an ex-girlfriend, for $9 million for palimony and alleged abuse. I looked her up on the web and was really shocked to see lots of her vulgar, nudie pictures and that she also had an enormous "rack."

On Real Time, Maher presents himself as such a liberal and such a supporter of women's rights and ideas. Yet, in his private life, it doesn't seem to matter what kind of women he associates with as long as they have a "rack."

And he's the one who says he hates hypocrisy.

I read on a message forum that you, HBO, are considering canceling my favorite show on televison, Real Time with Bill Maher. That would be a very sad day for me.

Bill's show is the ONLY reason I subscribe to your network. It is the only outlet I can turn to for talk of issues and substance.

If you take Bill off the air, you will have lost my respect and my subscription.

PLEASE keep Bill. America needs to hear his voice.

That's the message I sent them, hopefully we can talk some sense into them.
