If Al Gore did run next time, I have a feeling the media might go a little |
|
easier on him. Granted, it wouldn't do him any special favors, but maybe instead of "Al Bore" or "stiff," we'll get "left-wing grenade thrower" or "liberal insurgent." Besides, don't they like a good comeback story?
And here's a ranked list of people I like that have a realistic chance at the nomination:
1. Al Gore 2. John Kerry 3. Russ Feingold 4. Howard Dean 5. Wes Clark 6. Mark Warner . . . . . ...17. Hillary Clinton . . . . . . . . . . . ...156. Evan Bayh

1. I think Hillary Clinton should be #1. |
|
Anyone, at this point, would have a tough time up against a fully motivated and heavily financed Hillary campaign.

2. The red states will never put a woman in office. |
|
Women are a part of their bigotry, right up there with gays. Sad, but true. And the irony is....I bet women will turn out in droves to vote against her. Color me cynical ;-)

5. Hillary doesn't poll as well as Gore |
|
Gore outpolled Hillary all through 2003 in head-to-head matchups with Bush. Hillary's negatives are also a problem - she incites the Republican base to riot. She'd be a fundraising bonanza for the Repubs.

The only thing I worry about with Gore is that he is making too much money in the private sector and won't be lured back into the race. A brewing draft movement might solved that. In the meantime, he must be up a huge amount on the Google IPO. Google is sitting at $164. Gore probably got a bazillion shares at $1 per share.
You might add Edwards somewhere to your list ... although I guess it depends on what he does for a living these next few years.

ON EDIT - MSNBC Pat Buchanan etc.

7. I was a Kerry supporter, but I think you have Wes a little low. |
|
The way I see it, he's still taking opportunities for visibility, which suggests to me that he's still thinking of a run in 08. I have a hard time not putting him in the top 3, he's got a lot of positives.
As for the rest of your list, it would feel *so* good to hear myself say "after the election of Gore/Kerry in 08' etc. etc."
Where there's life there's hope.

8. Wes is done as far as running for President is concerned |
|
WHich is a shame, but unavoidable. He might do well as a V.P. candidate, or better yet, as Senator from Arkansas, but I think a straight on race for the Oval Office is a non-starter.
Just my opinion, from someone with a Clark For President denim shirt hanging in my closet.

I'm extremely curious to know what makes you think he's done. Do you think he was running for VP all along?

11. Governor seems more likely |
|
Arkansas already has 2 democratic senators who are young enough to probably be there for a couple decades or more unless they decide to move on to some other job.

|
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 07:01 PM by robcon
and I think she could beat anyone the Repubs could muster.
she's #1
anyone who thinks either Gore or Kerry has a chance is dreaming, IMO.
