So U2 sang 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' in front of bush today. |
|
At the Clinton Library thing today, and bush was in attendance. Interesting choice of song, especially since bush did a cover of it recently. http://www.audiostreet.net/artists/006/407/song_sunday_bloody_sunday.html

11. I thought for a while I was the only one...... |
|
... the choice of SBS was obvious and pointed.....
I loved U2 when they were nobodies in the Christian section of the music store.
I was fortunate enough to travel to Red Rocks for their historic concert.
I was fortunate to listen to him speak at our United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE about Africa, aids, and most of all..... human dignity.
This is a person who does very little by accident.......
God bless Bono.

Out of all the music videos created since the beginning of MTV, I am convinced that their version of Sunday, Bloody Sunday at Red Rocks is the most dramatic and captivating performance I have ever seen. There was just something about their stage presence, the drama, the theater....Bono at his very best. It was also the location - the flames at the top of the rocks, the cold night with everyone's breath visable...After seeing that video - I instantly became a U2 fan.
Tell me....what was it like to be there and see that performed live? Did you get anywhere near the "white flag?"

but the atmosphere was incredible. For the first time I felt....... not so alone in my rage and hurt and fear and hope for the world. It was nice to have those feelings and my desire for peace validated. I was 14 then and I still feel much the same way.

21. Yeah.... that was such the perfect song to sing. |
|
I couldn't believe they chose that song to sing with Bush being there. You know they didn't pick that song just for kicks. I would say U2 is the Generation X's version of the Beatles. At least, they're the closest thing we have to the Beatles these days and Bono's probably the closest thing we have to Lennon.

7. It was in reference to Clinton's contribution to the Irish Peace Process |
|
as the song is about civil war in Ireland
I thought it was a very touching "thank you" to Clinton for fostering the peace process there - Bono called Clinton an "Irish Son"

6. Did someone splice the Bush "Sunday Bloody Sunday" together? |

Was it doctored? I would think so. I couldn't imagine Bush really doing it.

15. It was culled from speeches he's given. |
|
I don't know much more than that.
Surprised it didn't get more notoriety in the days before the election. I'd started hearing about it in mid-October. Yesterday's Bono appearance and the choice of song are the only reasons I remembered it at all.

8. I was thrilled he did "Rain" |
|
It's my favorite Beatles song, but it's pretty obscure. It's a damn good song. Too bad they let it sink into obscurity as a B-side (to Paperback Writer). It should've been a double-A side or gone on Revolver.

Whenever references were made to peace vs. war, the crowd was the loudest. Terrible weather, so everyone was busy trying to keep dry and warm (failing at it, too). There were several not-so-veiled criticisms of trying to kill so-called enemies rather than trying to work toward peaceful solutions.
The final prayer closing the event was harsh toward use of violence. Shrub was stone-faced with that mean look of his.

Glad you braved the throngs; this Arkie wouldn't have gone near the River Market district on a bet. But it would've been SO cool to hear Bono and The Edge doing "Rain!"
And I'm sure the Boy King was royally pissed at
A: Having to be outdoors in the cold and damp and B: Having to stand next to the LOVE that The People were showing for that Hillbilly.

Yes, at least I can say I wuz there. Left-wing rednecks, united. The thought did pass through my mind that Shrubya was all wet, and at last everyone could see it.
(During the closing prayer, while the preacher was talking to God about Shrub's warmongering, ole Bar wasn't even pretending to be praying or even reverent. She was staring at the preacher's back, trying to drill a hole through him. Hilarious stuff. Watch it on C-SPAN, if they run it again.)

22. He also sang it at the 2001 Super Bowl. |
|
Not to say there wasn't any intentionality, but I do want to point out that Bono sings "Sunday Bloody Sunday" a lot. He sang it at the Super Bowl after September 11 and had all the victims' names scrolling up behind him on a screen, then opened up his jacket to reveal its special American-flag-patterned lining. Whee.
Maybe now he's singing it about Fallujah; but the song itself is apolitical enough that it can be adapted for almost any occasion.
C ya,
The Plaid Adder

24. Anyone know if there's any audio available of the singing? |
|
I was listening on Air America and they cut to commercial when U2 came on. Also, is the Red Rocks performance the same one that's on Under a Blood Red Sky?
I was in 7th grade the first time I bought a U2 album (I'm 32 now). Since Wide Awake in America was cheaper (I didn't know what an EP was), it was my U2 first album and Bad blew me away. Then came Live Aid--
While Kerry was campaigning I thought about how he would mend fences with our allies when he became president, and I had a dreamy notion that he could get a Live Aid 2 going. The time seemed ripe, with the situation in Africa, not to mention the Middle East, and you know what they say about music... But it was a corny idea, I thought, just my own nostalgia...
And then, what do you know... Bob Geldof decides it's time for a new Band Aid. Perhaps Live Aid 2 will be next-- when the recount is finished and Kerry is inaugurated? Alright, alright.... I'll dare to dream.
PS. Bono already recorded his old part for Do They Know it's Christmas- "Tonight thank God it's them instead of you"
