You LIBERALS are too hard on activist musicians |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 01:57 PM by PretzelWarrior
I see someone posting the great info about Bono and U2 singing at Clinton library dedication...
and then the self-hating, kiefer-drinking, birkenstock-wearing ultra-libs who snobbishly think they KNOW what it means to be morally clean go on about how U2 played at the superbowl and bono had a US flag on his jacket on the inside and the 9/11 victims names scrolled on a giant backdrop..
oh, and Bono doesn't do enough. U2 is past its prime. blah blah blah.
Shut your cake holes! Do you want a bunch of insipid "FAKE" activists like Grace Slick who cared more about getting high than fixing problems?
Do you want a bunch of self-involved musicians who only care about their limos and next record deal? Morally defunct problems of society like Snoop Dogg and Courtney Love?
Do you want a bunch of Lee Greenwood, Michael Worley, ALan Jackson, Toby Kieth types ruling the day?
Frankly, I am very very disappointed in those of you who want to throw incendiary bombs at people like U2 who've done so much to raise awareness and actively be involved in issues of social justice and fight against poverty, AIDs, etc.
He is a rock star. Not a president. Not a UN secretary general. If you got problems with the world around us...find the source and discuss THAT.
Bono and U2 are NOT the problem.
</end of rant>

2. Perhaps the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy should be rolled back to.... |
|
...pre-Bush days. Anyone making $250,000 plus as well as the taxes for dividends and unearned income, bring them all back. Just have the democrats introduce one tax restoration bill after another and filibuster all attempts at raising the debt ceiling, cutting taxes further for the rich, raising pay for congress, all RW agenda items. I think then that we democrats would find out who really is on the side of the little people.

He has been a constant voice for the voiceless. He supports eliminating third-world debt. We need more people, whether they be musicians, politicians, or Joe-6-pack out talking about these type of issues. I say rock on Bono.

Does more than most people. We can't even get more than a few people to show up to the next Democracy for America meetup on Dec.1 in my area. Either be a part of the process or STFU.

You are buying into a false view built of stereotypes and generalizations.
There is no group of shitty liberals. Like all people liberals are capable of being wrong, taking things too seriously, being over emotional and irrational. Its human nature.
What the republicans have done is created a liberal strawman who combines all the various things that liberals do wrong sometimes as if there is a group of liberals running around doing all those things.
This is the entire basis of the conservative movement, blaming problems on the imagined liberal elite. That is exactly where the language you used comes from.

20. Hey...I hate to disagree with you...but I"ve seen it here in Oregon |
|
In Eugene, in COrvallis, and in Portland. It is an EXTREME minority who are like that, but it is still a group that exists.
Someone who loves to criticize others who are trying but who have a chink in their armor really bug me.
I admit, my post title was a bit broad-brushed and inflammatory...but I am so sick of it. How can we make progress if those who carp and complain attain critical mass and those who are PRAGMATISTS don't get heard?

23. Webster calls them... |
|
..."sanctimonious," not "liberals." Both parties have sanctimonious people.
I agree with you. Criticism of any of the positive work done by Bono and/or other celebs sounds awful tinny coming from those who spend their entire days on the Internet, posting and reading crap all day long. Yeah, they're really saving the planet with their ass in that chair all day. :boring: But, like I said, this isn't strictly a liberal phenomena.
I wasn't a Princess Di fan, either, but she did some good work. Good work is good work.

16. Why are you trashing Grace Slick? |
|
"Do you want a bunch of insipid "FAKE" activists like Grace Slick who cared more about getting high than fixing problems?"
She went through a period of addiction. A lot of people did then. She has been clean and sober for many years and is working as an artist, supports progressive causes, and has done nothing to deserve your derision.
Most pop stars make a buck and that's the end of it, so yes, I'm all for "fake" activists.
You don't like people ragging on U2 (which has not been above egomania and commercialism), then why the hell are you ragging on other artists?
And as for those RW country stars ruling the day? Please. country is not mainstream and never will be. Get over yourself.

22. I should have clarified I was meaning "vintage" Grace Slick |
|
back in the Nixon hay day. Not Grace Slick as she may be now. She was just the most iconic example of someone I remembered who played the "rebellious musician against the establishmnet" brand pretty well but whose contributions were negligible. I meant her as representative of a TYPE of artist or citizen out there.
Thanks for the comment though. I agree it could be seen as ironic that I'm banging on people who critizice U2 and then do so again.

However, I have nothing against the musicians themselves, especially the ones who are trying to use their celebrity for good.

|
1. Statement
2. Moderate Agreement
3. Strong Agreement
4. Restate, but imply that the original poster didn't go far enough
5. Agreement, coupled with a remark that it doesn't matter because no one else knows about it
6. Agreement
7. Agreement
8. Troll (edited out before you ever see it)
9-35. Angry responses to the Troll
36. Agreement
37. Dissent
38. Agreement with the dissenter
39. Attack on the dissenter
40 Agreement
