What's your Favorite Scripture Verse for Shutting up Fundies
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 04:13 PM by RPM
Mine:

Matthew 7:1 - Judge not, lest ye be judged.

I also like this one for smut/shock value

Ezekiel 23:20 - For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.

On edit - please cite if you can ; otherwise I may not believe you!!!

The one about praying in your closet. I shut up Fidonet's #1 Christian Whackjob, Steve Winter, with that one. ;-)

42. Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen
1"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Prayer

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

9. I had a fundie tell me one time that Jesus said....
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

After I stopped laughing, I told him that was an old Chinese proverb, not a quote from Jesus and he never said anything of the such.

He got all red in the face and said "He should have!".

Imagine the gall of a fundie saying what Jesus should or should not have said?

They hate it. They much prefer the Old Testament's killing and vengeance. They hate all the stuff about turning the other cheek and blessed are the poor and condemning religious hypocrisy.

Actually, a big chunk of Christ's teaching was about religious hypocrisy.

34. The Old Testament and Revelation is all they seem to care about
For me, it's all about Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It all centers there. Everything else has to be measured against Christ's words.

Most of the Religious Right rhetoric fails this test miserably.

The attrocities of the old testament. Followed by the ignorance and other attocities of the the new testament. Jesus condoning slavery. All of the gospels as NONE of them tell the same story. And asking fundies to tell me where in the bible it shows abortion is wrong?

Then again even if it did, this is a secular country... our laws are not based on laws of any religion.

None of the gospels tell the same story
I love pointing that out when someone claims the bible is perfect and infallable.

Just ask them "when the disciples went to the tomb, how many angels did they see?"
Some of the gospels say one, some say two. Its fun watching them try to reconcile that.

Ezekiel 23

Two Adulterous Sisters

1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man, there were two women, daughters of the same mother. 3 They became prostitutes in Egypt, engaging in prostitution from their youth. In that land their breasts were fondled and their virgin bosoms caressed. 4 The older was named Oholah, and her sister was Oholibah. They were mine and gave birth to sons and daughters. Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.
5 "Oholah engaged in prostitution while she was still mine; and she lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians-warriors 6 clothed in blue, governors and commanders, all of them handsome young men, and mounted horsemen. 7 She gave herself as a prostitute to all the elite of the Assyrians and defiled herself with all the idols of everyone she lusted after. 8 She did not give up the prostitution she began in Egypt, when during her youth men slept with her, caressed her virgin bosom and poured out their lust upon her.
9 "Therefore I handed her over to her lovers, the Assyrians, for whom she lusted. 10 They stripped her naked, took away her sons and daughters and killed her with the sword. She became a byword among women, and punishment was inflicted on her.
11 "Her sister Oholibah saw this, yet in her lust and prostitution she was more depraved than her sister. 12 She too lusted after the Assyrians-governors and commanders, warriors in full dress, mounted horsemen, all handsome young men. 13 I saw that she too defiled herself; both of them went the same way.
14 "But she carried her prostitution still further. She saw men portrayed on a wall, figures of Chaldeans <1> portrayed in red, 15 with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea. <2> 16 As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. 17 Then the Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and in their lust they defiled her. After she had been defiled by them, she turned away from them in disgust. 18 When she carried on her prostitution openly and exposed her nakedness, I turned away from her in disgust, just as I had turned away from her sister. 19 Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. 20 There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. 21 So you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when in Egypt your bosom was caressed and your young breasts fondled. <3>
22 "Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will stir up your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust, and I will bring them against you from every side- 23 the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, the men of Pekod and Shoa and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, handsome young men, all of them governors and commanders, chariot officers and men of high rank, all mounted on horses. 24 They will come against you with weapons, <4> chariots and wagons and with a throng of people; they will take up positions against you on every side with large and small shields and with helmets. I will turn you over to them for punishment, and they will punish you according to their standards. 25 I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire. 26 They will also strip you of your clothes and take your fine jewelry. 27 So I will put a stop to the lewdness and prostitution you began in Egypt. You will not look on these things with longing or remember Egypt anymore.
28 "For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am about to hand you over to those you hate, to those you turned away from in disgust. 29 They will deal with you in hatred and take away everything you have worked for. They will leave you naked and bare, and the shame of your prostitution will be exposed. Your lewdness and promiscuity 30 have brought this upon you, because you lusted after the nations and defiled yourself with their idols. 31 You have gone the way of your sister; so I will put her cup into your hand.
32 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says:

"You will drink your sister's cup,
a cup large and deep;
it will bring scorn and derision,
for it holds so much.
33 You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow,
the cup of ruin and desolation,
the cup of your sister Samaria.
34 You will drink it and drain it dry;
you will dash it to pieces
and tear your breasts.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD .

35 "Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Since you have forgotten me and thrust me behind your back, you must bear the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution."
36 The LORD said to me: "Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then confront them with their detestable practices, 37 for they have committed adultery and blood is on their hands. They committed adultery with their idols; they even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to me, <5> as food for them. 38 They have also done this to me: At that same time they defiled my sanctuary and desecrated my Sabbaths. 39 On the very day they sacrificed their children to their idols, they entered my sanctuary and desecrated it. That is what they did in my house.
40 "They even sent messengers for men who came from far away, and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, painted your eyes and put on your jewelry. 41 You sat on an elegant couch, with a table spread before it on which you had placed the incense and oil that belonged to me.
42 "The noise of a carefree crowd was around her; Sabeans <6> were brought from the desert along with men from the rabble, and they put bracelets on the arms of the woman and her sister and beautiful crowns on their heads. 43 Then I said about the one worn out by adultery, 'Now let them use her as a prostitute, for that is all she is.' 44 And they slept with her. As men sleep with a prostitute, so they slept with those lewd women, Oholah and Oholibah. 45 But righteous men will sentence them to the punishment of women who commit adultery and shed blood, because they are adulterous and blood is on their hands.
46 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Bring a mob against them and give them over to terror and plunder. 47 The mob will stone them and cut them down with their swords; they will kill their sons and daughters and burn down their houses.
48 "So I will put an end to lewdness in the land, that all women may take warning and not imitate you. 49 You will suffer the penalty for your lewdness and bear the consequences of your sins of idolatry. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD ."

22. Here are my favorites for the abortion debate:
"If a man fathers a hundred children and lives many years, however many they be, but his soul is not satisfied with good things, and he does not even have a proper burial, then I say, `Better the miscarriage than he, for it comes in futility and goes into obscurity; and its name is covered in obscurity. It never sees the sun and it never knows anything; it is better off than he.'"
Ecclesiastes 6:3-5

"And if men struggle and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."
Exodus 21:22-25

23. Give all your riches to the poor
if you wish to follow me. I don't know the Book or verse, but it's what Jesus said to a man who wanted to follow him. The man thought better of it and decided to keep his riches (very Republican of him).

Where your treasures are therein lies your heart.

It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter into heaven.

48. "give to the poor", no qualifications mentioned
Matthew 19:20 - 24
20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Notice that there are no qualifications mentioned about "the poor", no mention of judging them first to see if they are worthy, no mention of "if they are not lazy". He said "give to the poor" not "cast judgement on the poor" or "insult the poor".

There has been speculation about "eye of a needle", some think it refers to a narrow opening in the wall of Jerusalem, others a rock formation on a cavavan route. For the camel to pass through, the material possessions must be taken off first. You can't take it with you, cast off your greed, otherwise forget it.

Tax breaks and tax loopholes for the rich???

49. also quotes from the founding fathers, like Franklin:
"All the property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it."

24. Leviticus 15-21
The same place where they point to for their anti-homosexuality stance (a man lying with another man is an abomination) is the same place where they recommend stoning someone to death for working on the sabbath, and also the same place where they refer to eating shellfish as an abomination. Apparently homosexuals and shrimp-eaters fall into the same category.

32. I didn't write this but I think you might like it
When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord Lev. 1: 9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21: 7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness Lev. 15:19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination Lev. 10:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16 Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? Lev.20:14

36. Thou Shalt Not Kill and Matthew, Ch 23
To my message Exodus Ch. 20, vs. 13: "Thou shalt not kill." (please notice, there is a period at the end of this commandment, not a list of exceptions), I received this brilliant reply from a right-wing preacher: The commandment to not kill is related to murder. Otherwise, the same God that said "Thou shalt not kill" would not have also commanded the government authorities to execute those who commit capital offenses. Neither would He have commanded His people to engage in warfare to execute enemies, as He did many times in the Old Testament. What are "peacemakers"? You seem to imply that peacemakers are passivists, people who wouldn't defend their country. Terrorists would love folks like you. It makes their job easier.

He can't spell either!

My favorite is Matthew, Chapter 23. The whole chapter is great, includes the repeated phrase "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisses, hypocrites!" and I also like "Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers." Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? There are a bunch of different things for which they get the "woe unto you" condemnation. Just pick one.

37. Mine is from Matthew, I think ...
I remember it pretty much word for word, but I can't remember the verse. It deals with dietary restrictions.

"There is nothing from without a man that, entering in him, can corrupt him."

Good for all sorts of arguments - including anal sex! Now that's Christian Fundament-alism

41. You will know them by their fruits.Grapes aren't gathered from thorn bush
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 04:37 PM by kerry-is-my-prez
“Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. So then, you will know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:15-18, 20

43. FFrF Quizzes
If on the interest, refer them to http://ffrf.org/quiz/ to take one or both of these quizzes. One is about how well you know the Bible and the other is how well you know the separation of church and state subject.

Taking the Bible quiz is a particularly good resource to figure out what scripture you want to use to shut them up on a specific point.

47. Prophets are prophesying lies in my name. They'll perish by sword &famine
Jeremiah 14

14 Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries <1> and the delusions of their own minds. 15 Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, 'No sword or famine will touch this land.' Those same prophets will perish by sword and famine.

51. i don't know the bible that well
but is there not a verse about "being our brothers keeper"? True story, i have vague memories of my mother using that one when asked why she was a democrat. This would have been way back in the 60's.

53. All good ones--here are two more
"With what shall I come before the Lord and bow myself before God on high?...He has showed you, o man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindenss and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:6, 8

"For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justifed. When the Gentiles (i.e. Pagans) who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They shwo that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus." Romans 2:13-16

55. Here are a few that I keep on my computer for easy access:
Matthew 22:37-40illegal codemakeRemote('duboard.php?az=html_table')
HTML lookup table
He said to him, " "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment.
And a second is like it: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Matthew 25: 32-46
All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,
and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left.
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;
for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.'

Then the righteous will answer him, "Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?
And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?
And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?'
And the king will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'
Then he will say to those at his left hand, "You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'
Then they also will answer, "Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?'
Then he will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.'
And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Luke 6: 20-38
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
"Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
"Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.
"But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
"Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.
"Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.
But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt.
Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven;
give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

Matthew 7:1-5
"Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.
For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.
Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?
Or how can you say to your neighbor, "Let me take the speck out of your eye,' while the log is in your own eye?
You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye.
