Holy or maybe Unholy Crap
Televangelical tentacles

TV evangelist Pat Robertson is threatening to mobilise millions of his Christian viewers and "de-liberalise" the US judiciary, writes Philip James.

Friday November 19, 2004

There is a defining moment in the life of every news organisation that marks a coming of age. In the case of CNN it was the opening bombardment of the first Gulf war. The upstart cable channel went live to Peter Arnett in Baghdad, while the traditional broadcast networks could only watch from their New York studios in shock and awe.

In the case of the Manchester Guardian, it was the day in 1959 when the paper reached beyond its Mancunian roots to become a national newspaper. And in the case of The 700 Club, Pat Robertson's daily evangelical news broadcast, it was November 3 2004. The day it became clear that George Bush had won a second term.

This day formally marked the transformation of The 700 Club. No longer could it be viewed as an outlet of relevance only to the loony Christian right. Not only did it join the ranks of the mainstream media. In many ways it supplanted them. Suddenly, if you seriously wanted to take the pulse of America, you had to tune your TV to the news division of televangelism.

The 700 Club has been operating under the radar of traditional journalistic scrutiny for over two decades. Anchored by Pat Robertson, he initially created it as a vehicle to promote his personal political ambitions. After his failed presidential bid in 1988, Robertson founded the Christian Coalition and embarked on an ambitious plan to influence the mainstream political agenda from the inside out.

3. F*** Pat Robertson!
I really dislike having to use vulgar language but I have had it with this clown! Pat Robertson wants America to be a theocrazy.

DUers, if you are going to debate some fundies about the religious right, don't forget to bring up the issue of the Moonies and how most televangelists are either under their control or are influenced by them. Many of the born-agains are either ignorant about that, or are in denial about how pervasive Moony-ism is. And some might even think its a great thing. For example, I told them that the Washington Times (neo-"conservative newspaper") is owned by the Moonies and they just shrugged it off. If it sounds futile, well maybe I am just a tad optimistic that one of them might just be turned off enough to leave fundamentalism.

4. I have tried on the Usenet many times
I even gave them links that proves DUHbya is one of them. I'm a liar. no DUHbya is a liar. I'm a born again that believes in separation of chuch and state, not some brainwashed minion with no independant thought. I found Christ because I looked for him he wasn't shoved down my throat. The sad thing is that they try to get me to think like them and I can't do it. I was raised to think for myself!

5. Thanks for your reply.
I'm glad there are folks like you out there to counter the more radical elements. I was careful not to say "all" born-agains are such and such. Religion works best when one searches for it, rather than being pressured into.

7. These people are greedy, manipulative and false phrophets.
I'm personally pro life that's why I'm pro choice. I understood where Kerry was coming from being I was raised Catholic. My parents let me make my own decision about religion after my Confirmation. Those who were raised Catholic would know what I'm talking about. When you are Confirmed you become a adult in the eyes of the Church and are able to make your own decisions reguarding religion. I chose a different path at 15 that's all. This was a long time ago and nobody twisted my arm to do it. This is the reason the Pilgrims came here, to not have a government forced religion.

"They came after the Jews, and I was not a Jew, so I
did not object. They came after the Catholics, and I
was not a Catholic, so I did not object. They came after
the trade unionists, and I was not a trade unionist,
so I did not object. Then they came after me and there
was nobody left to object." Reverend Martin Niemoeller.

These people are a danger to democracy.

6. They shall have dominion
In a very rough interpretation of Genesis 26, The 700 crowd believe they should have dominion over all nations in the name of god. They have been following a strategy for the last 20 years to take over the world starting with the takeover of the republican party. They are called dominionists. In the Arlen Specter case they publicly stated that they elected bush and that they are owed their due. They are just getting started. Keep your eye on this bunch. Check out:
