From this weeks Science. U.S. presidential science adviser John Margurger has some sharp words for researchers who publicly opposed "president" * reelection:Wrong message, wrong audience, wrong candidate... Science needs patrons, and our patron is society, but if we are not careful, the science community can become estranged from the rest of society and what it cares about".
Estranged from what are society cares about? That's a bad thing? Was Darwin suppose to tear up his theory of Evolution because society didn't care about it. Society cares about who will win American Idol. I refuse to do American Idol based research. At what point in history were most scientist working on subjects that society cared about? I'd say round about never. Oh after the fact society got around to caring about it after it turned out to be a major impact on their lives. In general scientist work in a vacuum outside of a society. Well that's not true. How about, hello, us scientist are part of society too and about 48 % of the society was at least interested in what we had to say last election.
I'm for faith based missile defense. It's cheaper and just as effective.
