"Volunteers Needed for Local Draft Boards"
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 10:14 AM by ncgrits
That is the headline in tiny little article in The News of Orange County (NC) this week.

And I quote:

The U.S. Selective Service System is looking for volunteers to fill positions on local draft boards.
Even though there hasn't been a draft since 1973, it is important for local leaders to maintain draft boards in case a situation arises and the draft has to be reinstated.
Orange County commissioners received a letter last week asking for recommendations for two positions that serve Orange and Person counties.
Barring a draft, the time commitment for board members is only four hours per year. This time is spent training for how to deal with appeals.
The Selective Service System has emphasized that their desire to fill vacant board positions does not in any way indicate that the draft will be reinstated.

------------------------
I'm just feeling way too cynical to think that this is an innocent coincidence. And Orange County is BLUE, solid BLUE, so we didn't ask for this. . . .

Anybody else out there know what's up with local draft boards?

There are millions of red-state rednecks that would volunteer if the pay was upped a little and Bush told them that the country needed them.

4. Oh riiiight - they're so patriotic they're waiting for more money !
The country doesn't need them but Bush needs them for his illegal war in Iraq. Many of our infantry companies are down to two platoons.

If the country faced a REAL danger, ALL Americans, and probably MORE liberals would be lined up to protect her. But nobody wants any part of Bush's bullshit war in Iraq.

I'm not holding my breath, waiting for the throng of "rednecks" to sign up, or the pay raise.

5. I'm not defending them...
I just think that Bush can get the volunteers if he needs them.

7. PRIVATIZED DEFENSE!!!!
........A draft is counterproductive to their desires.......On the other hand it could be a "cover".....Draft a few kids however at the same time "outsource" an equal/larger amount of "mercs" while everyone is focusing on the draft.....I can imagine the corporate "circle-jerk" taking place right now on this subject......

8. My neighbor, an ardent progressive...
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 11:43 AM by pelagius
...of the Green persuasion is considering applying for our local draft board. His reasoning? "If I can get on the board, I might be able to give some young kid a break."

My first reaction was negative, but, in the largely Republican area in which we live, he may have a point.

Any thoughts?

On edit: Changed the description of my neighbor from "liberal" to "progressive". He would HATE being called a liberal. :-)
