Poll question: Will Iran be the excuse for reinstating the draft?
The chimp is starting to beat his war drum over Iran. This will culminate with an invasion of Iran in order to "liquidate that rogue nation's nuclear programs." The Pentagon will need more boots on the ground to do this so guess what? They will "have no choice" but to reinstate the draft.

1. Iran, Korea, Canada
All are candidates. Perpetual war is the key to their hold on power.

3. I feel this issue is a little more complicated then just one choice.
I think the way they will try and reinstate a draft is going to be a three fold process. You will hear more about Iran and how they are a threat. You are also going to be hearing more about Korea and terrorist attacks on American interest abroad.

Stir all this together with a generous dose of Iraq and you will have their excuse.

4. He won't be able to do it...
...any other way unless he pulls already weiry soldiers out of Iraq and send them off to fight another war for oil. And even then, he is going to need the draft in order to cover sick, injured, and dead soldiers.

5. After a discussion with some friends
It comes to us that he is threatening Iran in a Iraq-style mess over the so-called nuclear threat. I think he is playing this up to worry Europe into an active campaign of negotiations to diminish the "threat."

6. It's very likely
but the GOP probably wouldn't do it, unless they were sure their votes were there - which means by then the entire nation would be Diebolded.

Once they are assured they will remain in power, nothing matters to these criminals.

7. Yes, but only until they replace it with another, a la the Iraq War
They'll most likely be a little smarter with their delivery of "backup" justifications this time around, I'm guessing. D'ya think *'s got Condi working on a nice little list right now?

It might go a little something like this:

It's justified because they have nukes. If we can't find the nukes we say they have, then it's justified because their democracy needed tweaking. If their people don't appreciate it, then it's justified because they were harboring terrorists. If we can't find any terrorists, then it's justified it's because Iranians are America-haters, etc. etc.

8. Iran will be the reason, not the excuse.
the excuse will be another 9/11, and all the mysteriously undamaged passports will point to Iran.

9. possible, but wouldn't that undermine Bush, Wasn't he elected to be
tough on terror? It seems like people would see through it by then. Maybe I'm too hopeful.

mark my words, this country will go up in flames, and bush will have done what bin laden couldn't.

11. Who here thinks Iran will wait to be attacked first?
I for one, do not. They already said the US doesn't own the monopoly on pre emptive strikes. This is not going to look like Iraq at all, the way I figure it'll start is with Iraq being hit when our soldiers are there... if I were Iran, I'd get my aggression going now while my enemy is weak..and that much we are.

Hope I'm dead wrong. It's all just such a freakin' mess. Thank god for sick humor, wine and sex, the stress can be overwhelming.

12. Probably no coincidence that they are reducing college grants
I wonder if they hope to get more people who feel they don't have a choice.

13. They could try but it wont happen
Our "leaders" may try to push it but the miltary itself will shut it down. They simply wont know what to do with the draftees (From what I heard just training a "grunt" nowadays take months)

14. There will be no draft.
A draft would make going to any war politically untenable.

Warnings of an impending draft was smart politics before the election to try and scare young people to the polls, but there was never any risk of it actually happening.

16. I hope you're right.
But I don't see the evidence. Everything I've seen says we either pull out of Iraq or we institute some kind of draft (and call it something else) just to be able to stay. Forget North Korea or Iran. We'll need some kind of draft just to stay in Iraq.

15. Iran is definitely next on the list.
Every night, there's a new news story on NPR about something naughty Iran's doing, though as far as I can tell there's no real story there.

My totally uninformed guess is that they'll try to do something with Iran without many soldiers involved -- maybe airstrikes -- at least at first.

I think they'll wait until we have a terrorist attack before they try a draft.
