DOD sez: insurgents have given their consent to be killed
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 11:38 PM by wtmusic
From the Abu Ghraib investigation final report:

"Ethical Foundation of Detention and Interrogation

Within our values system, consent is a central moral criterion on evaluating our behavior toward others. Consent is the manifestation of the freedom and dignity of the person and, as such, plays a critical role in moral reasoning. Consent restrains, as well as enables, humans in their treatment of others. Criminals, by not respecting the rights of others, may be said to have consented -- in principle -- to arrest and possible imprisonment. In this construct -- and due to the threat they represent -- insurgents and terrorists "consent" to the possiblity of being captured, detained interrogated, or possibly killed."

That's awfully kind of them to help like that...but someone help me: does it mean the Marines who abused the prisoners at Abu Ghraib have given their consent to be killed too?

1. Cool. So now it's a matter of what acts make a person a criminal.
How long before Dems or non-*-supporters become criminal for even saying their point of view?

Kephra posted this on another thread - but it deserves more attention.

7. interesting
I had never heard of this before. If the war in Iraq was put to a popular vote, would it have passed?

2. you could just as easily say
that all Americans in Iraq have consented to whatever the locals would like to dish out.

It's a really stupid argument for them to be making.

5. Just as North Korea did with the Bush Pre-Emptive Doctrine
The world sinks lower into depravity every day. And the US is the one who continues to up the ante.

3. Using that logic, to what have America troops consented
by waging an unprovoked war?

6. No wonder the Geneva Conventions are "quaint"
The Geneva Convention assumes a nation's enemies haven't consented to being brutally mistreated. We can mistreat criminals - it says so in our Const....well, in the Decla...well, it says so now!
