U.S. Marine killed in Iraq hours after birth of his son
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 08:05 AM by Danmel
OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Marine Lance Cpl. Shane Kielion was killed in action in Iraq not knowing that his first child had been born just hours before.

April Kielion, the Marine's widow and high school sweetheart, gave birth to a boy in Omaha on Monday, said Kielion's old high school football coach, Jay Ball.

"She's hanging in there," Ball said. "She's a strong woman. She's got a terrific family and lots of supportive friends."

How tragic. It simply breaks my heart.

1. a day that is supposed to be one of the happiest and most memorable
turns into a day that is also one of the saddest days in people's lives.

8. That is the best sig line ever
It's been years since I read 1984 and whenever I do get a reminder like yours, I'm blown away yet again how prescient he was.
(Do you mind if I borrow it?)

3. Thats great. In 19 years her son can die in a Bu$h mid-east energy war.
And keep up the family tradition. Cause this 1984 shit is going to continue forever unless real patriots stop it. Anyone supporting Bu$h and his gang of maggots makes me sick to the stomach.
Peace

11. Assuming he lives that long.
When the economy crashes, many will suffer and die.

Expect the wealthy to pull out their stocks just before the crash. But even then, a weakened dollar won't do them much good in the end.

Seems like our system, in the long run, may have been inadvertantly designed to thwart the greedy in the event of a situation like this.

4. I saw her on tv..

She actually said.."I knew he was going to war, but I never thought he'd be killed"... That's the crux of the problem here, folks..

Lots of young , and some not-so-young people are "going to war", and I don;t think it has really sunk into their psyches yet...

War means KILLING, and BEING killed.. That's all it really is..

Make the enemy die before he kills you.

That's all there really is to it..

All the lofty patriotic slogans, all the fancy flying flags, all the well-dressed soldiers marching along, and all the presidential houpla does not change that one fact.. It's about killing and dying.

Every soldier who goes there should "assume" that THEY might be that person...not that they WON'T be..

6. yes, this is very common
even when soldiers are going off to war, they and their families don't always think they will be one of those who have died that they hear or read about. we always hear about another soldier dying, but we rarely know about their lives. people think "it's war, soldiers will die". but even the family of those going off often don't think their soldier will be one of those who end up dying.

16. Reality sucks.. When I was only 24, I learned that
Our son was born with a serious birth defect (first child..ONLY grandchild on both sides) and of course the condition he had was a 1:600,000 type of thing.. The doctor said.."But you know, when it happens to YOUR child, odds are meaningless..It's always 100% for you "..

5. these type of stories are rarely mentioned in the media
they mostly show reunions of soldiers coming back and meeting their family and kids.

they rarely discuss the lives behind the dead. what was their life like, who did they leave behind when they died.
when they do discuss soldiers that died they do it in a general way about how they died for their country and should be honored. but we don't know much about them and their lives.

13. Omaha....
You're talking about real bush country. Maybe this poignant story will have an impact but most likely the local citizenry will lash out at Al Quaeda instead of where their anger belongs--directed at bushco.
