3. We are the largest area in the whole country that won't allow a Wal-Mart
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 10:09 PM by LaPera
Voted down Wal-Mart twice!!!

But the rednecks in Fortuna are pushing hard for one down there.

Fortuna is the last hold out of the "good old boys" network in Humboldt, they really are cowboys and loggers and mill workers and ex-commericial fisherman. But the big corporations fished things out pretty good as well as logged and clear-cutted the forest.

So now they want a fucking Wal-Mart for jobs????

17. For years Humboldt was actually very conservative
It ran mostly on the timber industry. Fortuna is where many of the old time fourth and fifth generation Humboldt residents still live. It's their last holdout. I'm actually pretty impressed Kerry did as well as he did there. Good sign!

2. I always loved Humboldt County.
DH and I always made a point of staying somewhere around there for a couple of weeks every time we were passing through from the northwest to southern California.

lots of care and know how! :smoke:

However there is so much more here to note in Humboldt, the arts, the music, the University, entrepreneurial atmosphere, the consciousnesses of the environment and caring, other organic gardening, etc. etc. etc...

7. My experience with Humboldt was always that it was a mix
of hippies and red-neck logger types.

I live in Sonoma county, which voted Kerry over Bush by 2-to-1, but we still have our share of yahoos and right wing freepers.

10. A political map of the west coast
well almost...
I have a summer home about an hour west of Eugene, Oregon, soon to be a retirement home. During the height of the campaign I drove from Eugene to the Bay Area and was struck by the signage I saw. In Eugene it was all Kerry/Edwards, once I left that city it was all Bush/Cheney
until about Yreka, then it was a mixture, leaving Redding it returned to Bush signs almost all the way to Sacramento.......just thought you'd enjoy the ride.....

"The People's Republic of Eugene".

I also lived in Chico a short time (actually Paradise, CA) and that whole valley all the way into southern California until LA is Bush/Cheney.

12. Lucky me, I live in Hydesville. Makes Fartuna look liberal.
Yuck. Out of a great county, I found the bastion of conservatism. Sorry. I'm just really pissed about it. There's still Support Our Troops signs in the bushes. Otherwise, we've got great people here. And as for the giant trees, well, Bush put an end to those. Massive cutting took place in the last three years. Very very sad. But still, it's better than most places. With luck, I'm off to Oregon within the month.

Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 09:58 PM by LaPera
and the guy I was getting directions from in Carlotta got all superior about living in Carlotta, as opposed to Hydesville...I started laughing and asked whats the difference? He looked at me and eyed me kind of funny, then kinda just ignored me. I still laugh thinking about it.

19. Hydesville is THE place to be, now.
I've got my house up for sale. I guess it's the breakpoint for the fog, or something. I can't stand the freepers. Gotta get out of here. But I LOVE Humboldt. I've only been here three years, and I know every single logging trail. I rode my bike every single day on these trails. Bears, mountain lions, elk. I am so sorry I didn't end up in Arcata. But the land was cheap down here. For some reason, land was expensive in Arcata. I've noted that where Democrats live, the land is expensive. So I buy low, and sell high, and eventually plan to have my dream wherever I want it. Well, I could bend your ear for a long time on property. This was the first time in my fifty years of living that I lived near republicans. I had no idea. I didn't know what life was like in anything but a Democratic neighborhood. Yuck. Double yuck. I just spent the last three years so disgusted. So I will make a ton of money and move on. I love the northern coast of California. What a great place. I have a love that I cannot explain. I'm just lucky I got here in time to be able to afford a few acres.

25. Where are you from originally?
Trinidad and Arcata housing is expensive...but everywhere in Humboldt the prices have skyrocketed...I don't know any republicans up here, but they are around...and in Fortuna to your area and then it mellows where the growers are in Blocksberg, etc...

I'm an Electrical Contractor and I been wanting to do what your doing...just time and not sure of where the best places to "buy low, sell high" are at...I have five acres myself with an absolute killer three story custom redwood home and live in a redwood forest...but I'm getting a bit bored, I've lived here nine years now and I want to live right on the coast...Petrolia, Trinidad, etc...

27. I grew up in Palo Alto
I escaped to the hills above Los Gatos. Then made my way to Ukiah. Then Hydesville. I've been lucky. I came out here to buy a dairy farm in Ferndale. But ended up with a gorgeous place in Hydesville. I think you'll find that Petrolia has become an extraordinarily popular place. I used to see places for sale, but never thought that living out there would work for me. Then when I discovered how nice it is, the prices went through the roof. And inventory disappeared. We just have to earn more money, in order to live like humans. It's a mixed blessing. I was a mechanical engineer, but I've surfed the real estate wave for the last ten years. I've had to work harder and harder to find nice places that are affordable. It's the pressure of the city, causing people to leave for places like this. We're lucky we got here ahead of the crowd. I've been sitting here for about 30 days, waiting to hear from the loan company. The moment they say go, I'm off to Oregon. When I heard a young kid call this "big tree country", I knew it would be hard to leave.

14. Arcata rocks. Nice people and a great co-op there. It is hard to believe
that Bu$h actually got 16% there.

They should check for fraud - 16% Bu$h really seems high for Arcata.

It's like a perpetual Summer of Love there.
I'll never forget the band of roving protestors two years ago. We trumpeted and drummed our way around town. I've never felt more at home. It's the university. People with intellect just don't vote republican. I feel so incorrect saying that, but it's by and largely true.

Check for fraud... Hahaha. That's great. :)
