Compartmentalizing corporations and government.
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 04:32 PM by K-W
One connection that I wish more people would make is between the nature of the modern corporation and the nature of government.

A government that is not representive, democratic, or in some way shape or form accountable to the general population is private. Our founding fathers were right. King's were not legitimate. King's ruled over a private organization of people and institutions that had gained a great deal of control over a certain region of land. The two major sources of that control were military/law enforcement and economy.

I think every American would agree with the evaluation of our forfathers that clearly some level of organization is needed to have an properly functioning society, a private organization accountable to no one can not be trusted to serve the best interests of the people, so we had to resist and rebel and reform our government so that it was democratic (at least that was the idea)

I have yet to meet an American from any political persuasion who doesnt easily comprehend that. We learn it in school. But why is it that any American who applies the exact same thought processes to a corporation considered a crazy radical?

Corporations are no different than the governmental model we all seemingly reject with a passion. Because they are large organizations, they are massively more powerful than individuals. Descisions made by corporate leaders have a very large effect on our society and the lives of many people in it. Corporations serve a vital role in our economy.

Anyone with any objective thought must see the obvious connection. It is undemocratic to have private organizations exercising control over society. If it is neccessary for society to have economic organizations, and it most certainly is, these organizations MUST be democratic. Thier leaders can not be chosen on a basis of bloodlines and networking amongst a ruling class, and this is exactly what is happening right now. This is exactly why private government didnt work and exactly why private enterpries doesnt work. A small group of people with no accountibility will not act in the best interests of a society.

Historically speaking, corporations are a part of our government. We are under the illusion that our economy is working under some magic force of free market capitalism. Somehow anarchy is sold to us as order. What is really happening is the same thing that happened since the beginning of time. The natural workings of a society focus power in the hands of the few and this seperation is institutionalized because of that power. The forfathers had no way of knowing that limiting the government would just create an economic power vacuum just waiting for a class of royalty.

Its time we realized it and did something about it.

This is my rant today as I do tedious work in corporate america dealing with the endless convolutions of our systems inefficiency that we like to call profits, debt, and investment.

3. Interesting
I never thought of it that way. I am not sure what to say about it right now. I hope someone else comments on this though.
