New Freedom Initiative-will someone post the Senate bill # please?
Then, we can at least look it up, see not only if it passed but also see who voted how on it.

1. As I understand it, it was funded in Saturday's bill

That's about as close as I can get to figuring out what has been thrown all over the board today.

5. If you look at the voting record from Senate on Saturday
It looks like the House version is HR2673
and the Senate version is S1072.

The actual details of each are available here on line.

16. Huh? S. 1072 is a transportation equity act
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 09:05 PM by KamaAina
and HR 2673 appears to be the agriculture spending bill.

Originally the "New Freedom Initiative" was a name given by Bush** to the entire package of disability programs, most of them promulgated by Dems and under constant attack from repukes, of course.

I was not aware that NFI had been made into actual legislation. I fear to look inside and see what may (or may not) be in it... :scared:

edit: S. 1072 does indeed contain a "new freedom" section, for accessible transportation, right in the transportation bill where it belongs. So we still need the bill no. for the Big Broither stuff...

hoping to get an answer.

I don't doubt that it passed, but it would be nice to have a bill number, or link to solid proof online. I'd like to call my Senators about this, but would like to have a bit more information about what passed so I at least sound like I know what I'm talking about.

8. "State Incentive Grants for Transformation"
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 07:50 PM by cosmicdot
from a letter to Dianne Feinstein

http://government.aol.com/mygov/bio/userletter/?letter_id=115727801&content_dir=congressorg

asking for her help in preventing this:

The appropriations bill line-item that deals with funding the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC) are the "State Incentive Grants for Transformation."

fwiw

No bill number provided ... however, googling landed some articles on the subject for thread readers' FYI interest ...

Last September, AAPS lifetime member Rep. Ron Paul, M.D., R-Tex., tried to stop the plan by offering an amendment to the Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations Act for FY 2005. The amendment received 95 “yes” votes, but it failed to pass.

NEW MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE FORWARDS PSYCHIATRY'S BRAVE NEW WORLD
TOTALITARIAN RULE TO DIAGNOSE AT WILL

Diagnostic "Screening" Process is a Con-Game To Troll For New Patients

According to the British Medical Journal, a sweeping U.S. mental health initiative will be unveiled in July which proposes to screen every man, woman and child in America for mental "illness." The initiative was prompted by a March 2004 progress report by The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. President George W. Bush appointed the commission to advise him on ways of improving the mental health system. However, psychiatric advice has grossly misled the President and the American people.

Article & Essay: Bush Wants To Be Your Shrink (scary pix of *)

~snip~ Allen Jones, an employee of the Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General, wrote a whistleblower report in which he stated that behind the recommendations of the New Freedom Commission was the “political/pharmaceutical alliance” that developed the Texas project, which promotes the use of newer, more expensive antipsychotics and antidepressants. He further claimed that this unholy alliance was “poised to consolidate the TMAP effort into a comprehensive national policy to treat mental illness with expensive, patented medications of questionable benefit and deadly side effects, and to force private insurers to pick up more of the tab.” ~snip~

So far I can't find anything relevant to the NFI in it.

I did a search for "State Incentive Grants for Transformation" on Thomas and the only thing that came up was Ron Paul's proposed Let Parents Raise Their Kids Act...

21. I called Ron Paul's office today
I called Ron Paul's office today and according to the person I spoke with the relevant bill is HR4818. He told me that $20 million had been allocated for states to implement the recommendations of the New Freedom Commission. I asked where in the bill I could find the relevant language pertaining to this and he told me that it was one line buried somewhere in the accompanying committee reports. He didn't provide an item number so I don't see how I can possibly find it in the pages and pages of legislation there.

Hopefully more information will be forthcoming.
