Drape everything in black crepe and wear a black armband to protest against Bush's visit to Ottawa.
Dateline: Sunday, November 21, 2004
This just in! Elizabeth May of the Sierra Club is asking Canadians to tie a black ribbon around the old oak tree - and anything else that doesn't move - to show that Canada is a nation in mourning as a result of US policies.
"We are a country in deep mourning, " said May in an email. "in mourning for Margaret Hassan, for the innocent dead of Iraq, for the poor, for the environment he plans to butcher...for the rule of international law, democracy, human rights and a respect for the dignity of each human being and life form on this sacred planet.
"Bush represents Death. We call on Canadians to greet him by tying black crepe or cloth ribbons to everything in sight - our front porches, our trees, our lampposts, car antennas ...Christmas decorations. Wear black arm bands....hold vigils. Pray."
And this earlier bulletin indicates another, compatible set of actions:
The Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) is calling on the Martin Liberals to reject the Bush agenda and is asking its member groups to mobilize for cross-Canada days of action to coincide with the US President's state visit to Ottawa, Nov 30 - Dec 1. Events will be organized from coast to coast to coast by people in Canada who oppose the militarism that George W Bush and his administration represent.
Paul Martin is being asked to sign on to the US Missile Defense (MD) plan and to increase our involvement in Bush's wars abroad. These policies are making the world a much more dangerous place. People in Canada are overwhelmingly opposed to the war on Iraq and are committed to stopping any involvement in the MD scheme.
Wear black! And join one of the events that will be organized from coast to coast to coast to oppose the militarism that George W Bush and his administration represent.
Justice - Freedom - Equality: NO TO BUSH! From November 30 December 1, 2004, George W Bush, President of the United States, will be in Ottawa for a State visit. Bush is wrong, and the people of Canada know it. We, the No to Bush Committee, call for actions to occur throughout Canada, and especially in Ottawa, for the duration of the time that George W Bush is here. The No to Bush Committee is organizing mass demonstrations. We invite all who oppose Bush and his policies to come to Ottawa for these events. We are organizing housing, food and legal resources, and a central information and welcome centre. Anyone demonstrating against Bush can make use of these resources.
