WOW! Two tires slashed on my boss's W bumperstickered car
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 09:25 AM by underpants
We don't talk politics (not a good idea in the office) but he came into my office this morning to tell me that for the second time someone slashed one of his tires. His block seems to get hit by assholes like this every time-an SUV got burned down not far from him over a year ago.

I'm sorry- I am all for speaking out and making your voice heard but destruction of personal property is over the line. This is on the tails of our discussion about social breakdown as highlighted by the sports fights over the weekend. He agrees with me that, though there is not really a financial cost, stealing of yard signs during the election was un-America, undemocratic, and just flat out wrong. I told him about this "JFK Reloaded" video game and he was aghast-mind you the Kennedys are no favorite of his.

A nice guy, though we agree on very little, and NO ONE deserves that.

1. I agree that no one deserves that.
That's not anything people should condone. I know folks are going to say he deserves it because he voted for Bush, but violence and vandalism will only make things worse.

2. Maybe it wasn't political...
...maybe it was done by the husband of the woman your boss is cheating with? Just a thought...
Agree with your sentiments about taking things too far, though.

3. I agree.
I mean, it's tempting to vent like that, but in the end, it only works against you. If you feel that strongly about something, talk to the person -- go up to the person in the SUV with a W sticker and say something. Or write up a flyer expressing what's wrong with W or SUVs and stick it on their windshield. Maybe they'll read it. It would do more good. I think there's a rising tension, because some feel so helpless.

6. I think it has more to do with location
He lives on a very pricey street very near a university. His street actually is pretty liberal in terms of voting and politics.

5. What worries me
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 09:31 AM by Corgigal
is a family member, who lost a loved one in Iraq, and is sick with grief, sees a vehicle going by with a W sticker.

Actually I'm amazed it hasn't happened.

8. Please accept my condolences on your loss
I felt the same way when I lost friends to Vietnam and had to endure the smug Repugs and their head asshole Nixon. Your anger is completely normal and understandable.

Peace

10. I saw a guy with a HUGE 12 to 16 inch W on his SUV window. WTF
it's like a dictatorship around here with all the effin W and W pictures around here.

No one deserves his tires slashed. Perhaps he cut someone off or someone is pissed @ him for another reason.

11. The Repugs have wielded uncivility as a weapon, hateful stereotypes
and innunendo as ammunition, and ridicule and abuse as entertainment. We are going to experience a very unpleasant society for decades to come, where "might" makes right and "anything goes" against those with whom we disagree.

I was one of many who was excoriated by society after the Repugs painted all Federal workers as "lazy and unnecessary exploiters feeding on the public trough," and overtly as the "enemy" to the public good. I thought we would finally see a backlash from that attitude and rhetoric after Tim McVeigh clearly converted their hateful message into terrorist murderous action...But, no.... I've seen very little evidence of "lessons learned." Now, this divisive, hateful attitude is spilling over into everyday life. There seemingly must be someone to blame for everything and the anger-driven entertainment punditry on talk radio and Faux news just eggs it on.

So, I am saddened, but not surprised that some on our side are assuming these "get even" tactics of vandalism.

13. I've had tires slashed when I owned a car
And you know, try as I might, and as hard as I would look at the tires, I was unable to discern the reason someone had slashed the tires. I looked for a real long time and thought as hard as I could, too. Perhaps if I sent a photo of the slashed tires to your boss, underpants, he could divine why they were slashed? I haven't thought about it in years, but your story brought it to mind and now it's bugging me a little bit. I'd even send along a dollar, so your boss wouldn't just be wasting his time.
