I think a strong case can be made for saying that the U.S.fears true
democracy in most countries, especially in those countries that possess vast quantities of oil.Saudi Arabia, Venezuela,,Iran,Iraq, the Emirates, the Caspian Basin countries(Azerbaijan,Armenia,Turkmenistan,Kazakhstan) all are good examples.
The saudis of course have been long term clients afraid of their own people and surviving because of the protection offered by the U.S.In Venezuela, the rise of a popular leader like Chavez who is not beholden to U.S. interests sends a shiver down the spines of U.S. oil companies.Only fear of a massive disruption of oil supplies prevents them from making any more foolish rash moves like the ones they plotted last summer. Iran is the classic case of the subversion of a democratically elected government when Kermit Roosevelt engineered the overthrow of Mossadegh and installed a megalomaniac stooge like the Shah as the Emperor. That lasted nearly thirty years and all the men in the U.S. forces could not save the stooge when his time was up.

In Iraq, a similar history may be unfolding before our eyes. The U.S. having chosen to invade a country on the flimsiest pretexts to impose a stooge regime, now finds itself confronting a popular rebellion against the stooge Allawi.Even if he survives this with the U.S. forces'support, he is likely to meet with the same fate as his illustrious predecessor stooges. The same can also be said of Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan.
