The CIA is watching us....
The CIA is quietly funding federal research into surveillance of Internet chat rooms as part of an effort to identify possible terrorists, CNET News.com has learned.

In April 2003, the CIA agreed to fund a series of research projects that newly disclosed government documents say were intended to create "new capabilities to combat terrorism through advanced technology." One of those projects is research at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., devoted to automated monitoring and profiling of the behavior of chat-room users.

Even though the money ostensibly came from the National Science Foundation, CIA officials were involved in selecting recipients for the research grants, according to a contract between the two agencies obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and reviewed by News.com.

8. Oh, thank goodness -- it's only chat rooms.
That means they aren't monitoring discussion boards, like this one.

That's such a relief.

Right? ;-)

28. Yes...
... you keep thinking that... you'll feel better.

(I think the story is about 'chat rooms' because the technology for monitoring them would be new/novel. The technology for monitoring places like DU is available here.

18. FCC wants Christian morals for the net and cable
FCC wants Christian morals for the net and cable

Praise the lord

By Nick Farrell: Friday 19 November 2004, 08:54

US COMMUNICATION watchdog the FCC is apparently so pleased with its moral crusade following the Janet Jackson boob it now wants to purge what it calls immorality from the interweb and cable channels.

Apparently acting with support from both Republicans and Democrats, the FCC is poised to get even more aggressive about enforcing moral values throughout broadcasting. So far the FCC has been really good at purging swear words and sex from telly by chucking huge fines at the broadcasters. The net result of its actions have been that viewers have been switching to cable in droves.

Some analysts think that this is behind the FCC's move to expanding its jurisdiction to encompass the alternatives, cable TV, satellite TV and radio and the internet. Although attempts to do this in the past have failed, the Republicans are now more confident that they can push something through now that they have a moral majority in all law making institutions. One thing that is interesting is that both the Republicans and the Democrats think that some form of censorship of the media is a good thing.

They all repeat the "mantra" that they are somehow protecting their children by protecting them from the outside world and to be scared of sex.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19761

None of the US media that are looking at this story have said how the FCC is planning to censor the interweb. We assume they would have to follow a similar model to China where autocratic censorship of a huge population on the Interweb has been largely successful.

To the CIA,

Did you find Osama yet? Maybe he is in a lock box someplace. Maybe he is hidden in a favorites file, maybe you just need to get out of here and go look for him and work for a living.

22. Bet they love Bush!
How he tries to make them the scapegoats!
Imaginary weapons of mass destruction, ignored CIA warnings.
Our CIA cannot be watching us, since we are the good guys. That would make our CIA like the KGB, wouldn't it?
I'm sure our CIA will realize that they are a big drain on our taxes and almost useless with Tom Ridge et Alia saving us time and time again. So they will resign, rather than pilfer the taxpayers' hard earned resources.

I bet they are ashamed to cash their megabuck pay raises in when 9/11 occurred. It's not like they were getting hush money, was it?

I bet they like serving an administration that outs them.

Must be great creating layers after layers of plausible deniability when you know the truth you swear to be uphold belongs to the American people.

They can sure bet I believe those alien encounter stories. I wouldn't ever think that we have some sickos in the government who want to expose people through generations of exposure to uranium out in the southwest. Why those victims may even get confused with space aliens once in a while! Or some sickos named Bush who twice exposed our troops to depleted uranium warhead explosion aftermaths.

And if they are still reading this, they know my contacts within the FBI has turned on its super duper top secret reverse spy system on the CIA to set 'em up like Lee Harvey Oswald.

you folks do, saving us - that is, humanity - from ourselves.

It's a shame President Kennedy can't be here himself, but I'm sure if he were, he'd say "'Smash the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter them to the wind'? Where was my head?"

Your greatest hits are yet to come! :hi:

26. This begs the question
Does anyone posting to a public chat room or BB have a reasonable expectation of privacy? I like to think of the Hotel Lobby Rule at another board (never post anything that you'd be uncomfortable saying in a hotel lobby).

More importantly, though, if anyone is actually STOOOOOOPID enough to discuss a criminal enterprise on a public board, don't Darwinian standards dictate that they SHOULD be caught?
