What do you think? Are we smarter than they are? Read the comments, it would appear that I, for one, am at least more arrogant than they are.

:)

On edit, I made a stupid mistake and didn't proofread my title line. Pot and kettle, and all that. :eyes:

6. So what?
I hope it makes you feel good, because aside from that, it does no one any damn good.

8. Absolutely true
It wasn't meant to do any real "good", per se. But it felt great, and it's true.

9. It's just not obvious from your subject line ...
"smarter the conservatives"??? Don't you mean smarter THAN conservatives?

True, we ARE smarter than they are, but if I were going to POST that, I think I'd proofread my post.

I shake my head when the compassionate god-fearing, homophobic, America-first, throw-out-the-immigrants-and-seal-off-the-borders, fuck-the-poor, muslims-are-animals, war-is-peace, anti-welfare (hey, where's the compassion!?!) people on the American right are refering to liberals as lunatics. Trust me, it's not the consensus here in Norway or other parts of Foreignia. The leader of the largest conservative party's youth group here refered to republicans as "kristenfascister", christian fascists. But these people are in many ways left of Lieberman-style Democrats. I have my own word for republicans and other fanatical right-wingers. Criminals.

I don't consider myself a liberal, and there is much in liberalism I disagree with. But I do see you, American liberals, as an utterly important and positive force in your society, a beacon of light, which in the end benefits the rest of the world.

13. Smart people know how stupid they are; stupid ones trumpet their surety
There are many conservatives who are very smart, but they're conservatives out of greed, racism, fear of change, dewy-eyed love of a romanticised past or some combination of four.

Absolute certainty is a sign of fear, circuitry limitations or both. Like it or not, faith is a version of the same mindset.

Think of it: to claim fundamentalist belief it to claim an understanding of the entire universe; that's just silly.

15. I get your point. But I think its the labeling thats part of the problem
I dont believe any of us are either liberal or conservative. There are great aspects to conservative thinking and great aspects in liberal thinking.

For example, a true "conservative" thinker would be very much the environmentalist and would strive for conserving energy, conserving the environment and natural resources overall. You can probably see that many who call themselves "conservatives" are the antithesis of conservatism. They are just using the label to protect their true agenda and/or to lie to themselves that they are truly "conservative". There are people who deem themselves liberal who are not truly liberal thinkers. They use the term for the same agenda whatever that may be. I think it boils down to peoples actions and how they respond to situations which indicates who they are as people, and what kind of integrity they may have. This is true for all of us.

Perhaps more the key is to looking at the fact that terms like liberal and conservative divide us and politicize issues that shouldnt be politicized. Labels divide us and constrict creative thinking and investigating in positive, logical solutions. I think we need more to look at the quality of someone's actions as a gage of their true integrity or lack thereof. In addition, its important to move away from labels and focusing on political parties and look to finding the similarities that bring us all together as a larger community.

17. The problem
lies in the fact that the core base, the religious right, doesn't want to be united, they just want to be right. They feel they have god on their side, and everyone and everything else is wrong by default. I agree, they're neither compassionate nor conservative, but they KNOW they are, so my opinion doesn't mean dick either way.

18. Your opinion doesnt matter only if YOU believe it doesn't matter.
But it matters very much.

You are right when you say there are those who just want to be right. In that case, its an issue of earning respect.

With a bully, you earn their respect by quite frankly punching them in the face (figuratively or literally) when they are threatening you.

A friend of mine who grew up in East Texas said it was like a rites of passage when a well known bully came up to him and challenged him. He cold cocked him and that was it. He wasnt bothered again. Im guessing that is still a factor in dealing with the bullies of the world.

Its realizing that our opinion and our beliefs are EQUALLY as important as anyone elses and its important to fight for that standing.

19. I like the bully analogy
Trouble with the US today is that Bush thinks the smaller kid is the bully.

20. The bully analogy is an easy and valid way to describe.
When anyone abuses their power, be it physically, financially or whatever, its all still abuse.

Overzealous abusing, dismissing and neglecting of the truth is much of what we are seeing these days.

I think what most don't realize is how that affects EVERYONE and everything ulitimately.
