LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California teacher has been barred by his school from giving students documents from American history that refer to God -- including the Declaration of Independence.
Steven Williams, a fifth-grade teacher at Stevens Creek School in the San Francisco Bay area suburb of Cupertino, sued for discrimination on Monday, claiming he had been singled out for censorship by principal Patricia Vidmar because he is a Christian.Since the teacher is a self-described "Christian" with a persecution complex, chances are, he was using history to prove some contention about this being a "Christian Nation" to his impressionable 5th graders, the principal got word of the inappropriate behavior and this was his way of trying to put a stop to it.
Still, the Declaration of Independence is a fundamental historical document, not a religious screed. Banning it was an overreaction.
I'm an atheist, I despise even a hint of theocracy, but The Constitution and Declaration of Independence should be sacrosanct as historical documents.
I wish the principal had used more discretion, instead of giving fundie freaks more fuel for the fires to say that we want to ban the Bible or strike God from the Constitution.
