Eat nothing today. I challenge you. |
I'd like to think I'm not the only one who feels he has no right to eat more than a human should be allowed to, while families have empty seats at their table where their loved ones in the military used to sit ... while families in Iraq continue to suffer at the hands of my government ... while soldiers stare death in the face every single day for a war they had no business being thrown into, and no idea of when (or if) they will be leaving ... I have no right. And I'm not going to, no matter how much grief I get from my right-leaning family members at the dinner table tonight.

I will curb my appetite for the rest of the day, and eat as little as my mom lets me!

4. In my religion we have a few fasting days each year |
where you take nothing, not even water, until some time in the evening, and one day a year when you take nothing at all all day (although that one's optional). It's really hard, and my respect goes to anyone who can fast for a day.

5. I was shocked when I walked |
into the grocery store yesterday. Unlike many people who get their petroleum "fix" driving to the store every single day, I made my weekly trip to buy food. When I walked into the vegetable section, I was greeted with what I considered to be a glutonous surprise- where usually sits an ample supply of everything under the sun that one could possibly eat, was mountains of more food than I had ever seen. It felt bad. I can't really say more than that. It just felt greedy. I was literally ashamed. Embarrassed. American. My whole life is a boycott. Pathetic, you say. I can hear you thinking. Well, I think not. Conscientious would be more like it. I'm living my life so that your kids will have tomorrow. No, I'm not bragging. Just the way I work. Do unto others...yadda yadda. So today is not unlike any other day. Except that I get to watch the circus of gluttons feast. I feel for those who have not. I pray that they could have as much. Because after all, it is not so much excesses that I dislike as much as inequality thereof. Everyone should be so lucky. But until then, it's ugly. I will be thankful when we all care enough to care for all.
