Our family has a special reason this year to give thanks.
One of our daughters who has completed a medical intership after medical school, has joined Doctors Without Borders and will be leaving for Sub-Saharan Africa next week. She happens to be appropriately named Teresa. She has not merely made us proud but brought home to us what it means to be an American during our years of shame under the Bush regime.

Sometimes, it is our youngsters that have to save us from our despair, it seems.

2. Well you must really be proud
It is people like her, professionals who could stay here and make the megabucks but devote their lives to helping others that really make it worth while to be human.

3. Congratulations on having raised a wonderful caring
daughter. We watched a special on Dr's without Borders a few months back. We will keep her and your family in our thoughts. May she be safe and richly rewarded for her efforts.

sincerely.

5. There used to be a special
on Nat'l Geo. Channel about Dr's w/o Borders. They are awesome and did such great, unselfish work. Always thought that type of calling would be so rewarding, and think of all the different people she'll meet/help! You must be proud indeed!

6. I was very despondent after November 2 and was wondering if the
country I have grown up in is now totally lost, idealism shattered and its reins of government put at the service of men who stand for nothing.I now believe that there is a way out and that is to remain steadfast to the ideals embodied in our Constitution and do as much good as we are capable of in our daily lives. That way, we will not be overwhelmed by despair. As John Kerry said in one of his debates,"by their acts ye shall know them".Truer words were never said.

8. I felt the same way. I had put such faith in
our democratic ideals (against the war, pro-choice, letting gay people be like anyone else, etc.), and the hoopla on here the a.m. of the election just sent me over the moon. So the reality was so heart wrenching. And I too really got to know and love John Kerry and his family. Still do, and as of now, I'd vote for him in a second. Intelligence, integrity, basic traits that are lacking now. It's very profound that your daughter is trying to make a difference, because of great parents no doubt! and that will be such a great experience for her!

10. I am moved...
Thank you for sharing this about your daughter. She and you are very brave and the kind of Americans who make us feel proud.

Out comes the checkbook to Dr. w/o Borders.

Again, thanks. Your daughter is an inspiration.

11. Good for her!
MSF is one of the most ethical and discerning organisations on Earth. You are right to be proud.

There's a lot of work to be done. People like your daughter will wash away your shame.
