Between now and January the Bush administration will have to decide whether or not to take the last dignified exit from Iraq

That is, to announce before the elections that we will be leaving soon after them....very short but very interesting article with information and ideas that are not out there in the mainstream.

5. there is only one way out of Iraq...
and many pissed off Iraqis. Add in some angry Iranians and you have another Highway of Death, in reverse.

3. That article is full o' flaws.
The probability of any kind of joint US-Israeli attack of any kind on anybody is remote. Furthermore, the USAF no longer requires good weather to mount opperations as it often did in Vietnam and Gulf War I. If Saddam had blown the oil wells again we could have seen through the smoke clouds this time and everyone knew it.

I don't think Iran could defeat the US. Even if they attacked us in Iraq, we'd bomb their cities and try to drive a wedge between the old clerics and their young population who probably wouldn't want to be dragged into a war. Then there would be a counter-revolution and this time the students would be more moderate and perhaps somewhat pro-West. An Iranian intervention of any overt significance would be political suicide for the mullahs.

4. Well you have another opinion. I have seen weather mentioned as being

important in strategy in this area.

6. Well, yes it is just my opinion...
however I suspect that if people have been talking about the weather in context of a US/Iran conflict, it would probably involve the US taking advantage of bad weather, not the Iranians.

Bad weather has often changed the tide of battles and campaigns, but the US military is so well equipped and prepared that we could take on just about any scenario. We won't be like Napoleon and Hitler and get stuck in the snow. Those lessons have been learned by militaries all over the world.

7. The winter months in Iraq account for 90% of the rainfall, each day has
at least one half a day with cloud cover which effects the use of missiles and other strategic equipment. I am writing from memory so I might be off a little on the percentage but not much. It might not matter at all perhaps we would prevail in this scenario but what he wrote or as I understand it with a little "luck" on the other side the tide could turn their way. I think that was what he meant to pose a possibility not presume a certainty. I don't think you are wrong I don't think even he thinks he is absolutely right but it is interesting information.
