I'm a baby boomer and I heard you talking. I heard you say I'm stuck in the sixties. I guess you think that because I have retained what was good and true about that period of time. For example, I still favor peace over war whenever possible. Or maybe it's that I still believe in individual freedom (and the responsibilities that entails) and that I still value the well-being of Americans and all humans over profit. Perhaps you say I'm stuck in the sixties because I still believe in honesty and real democracy in politics, in a politics that helps people rise up instead of one that drags them down.
The sixties, Radical Right Wing, is not dependent on a period of time. It is simply representative of any period of human awakening.
So, sure, I'm stuck in the sixties. And guess what? Soon I'll be in my damn sixties and I won't be done being an activist, so you're stuck with me. Not only that, but you're going to have my generation's activist grandchildren to deal with very soon. Oh, you forgot about our grandchildren? I can understand that. You have falsely painted us as devoid of family values and so maybe you just can't fathom that we do indeed have families.
I heard you say my generation has an "if it feels good, do it" philosophy and I'll agree with you there. Yes, I can agree with you, but only in part: some of my generation has an "if it feels good do it" philosophy. But it isn't the stuck in the sixties group. It's you! Vice President Dick Cheney, for example, explained that it "felt good" when on the floor of the Senate he told Senator Patrick Leahy to f___ off. And President George Bush, just prior to announcing the current Iraqi invasion, pumped his hands in the air and affirmed, "feels good!" Invading Iraq for dubious reasons may have felt good for you all, Radical Right Wing, but it didn't feel good for a whole bunch of people, many of whom are dead or injured now.
Yes, there is such a culture of feels-goodism, Radical Right Wing, and it's yours. Tax cuts for the rich feel really good. Never mind the long term consequences. Damaging the environment feels good. Who cares about the future? Subverting democracy for personal gain? How does it feel? Good? Only because you're morally bankrupt!
The baby boomers aren't homogenous, Radical Right Wing. Some of us have sold out to corporatism and have mortgaged our dreams to profit, while others of us still proudly keep alive the dreams that embody the sixties. And neither you nor time can defeat those dreams.
