New Freedom Commission
There was a long, long thread concerning the implications of the mental health policy directions under the new administration in the Latest Breaking News forum. The thread was getting out of control, so I'm posting this here for anyone who wants to read it. This is the actual text of the Commission's report. I have not read the entire report yet.

President George W. Bush established the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health in April 2002 as part of his commitment to eliminate inequality for Americans with disabilities. The President directed the Commission to identify policies that could be implemented by Federal, State and local governments to maximize the utility of existing resources, improve coordination of treatments and services, and promote successful community integration for adults with a serious mental illness and children with a serious emotional disturbance.

Will * himself be checked out? The debates had shown that he's a few books short of a library...

Eliminate equality? Or eliminate Americans with what they define are disabilities? It's all worded very well, but those are just words.

4. Despite the appalling name
I don't yet see a problem with this initiative. However, I have not read the entire text. I'm reserving judgement until I read the whole thing. So far, I haven't seen anything to indicate that testing would be mandatory, or without parental consent.

5. Let me tell you a few
who does the screening? Parental consent not mentioned? What constitutes a mental illness? Who pays for it? What happens to those that refuse to take their meds?

I could go on, did you read my links?
