MSNBC - "Giant Jesus of I-75 - Ohio" Story Coming Up!

http://www.channelcincinnati.com/news/3950572/detail.html

I AM SO LUCKY, because I only live about 10 miles from this lovely work of art! I get to see it just about every day on my I-75 trek.

The Giant Jesus of I-75 cost a mere $250,000 to erect, with the full support of The Solid Rock Church in Monroe. Guess that money wouldn't have been better spent... ummm... I dunno... feeding the hungry?

MSNBC is about to cover the story, so, enjoy. :eyes:

3. There's a rumor 'round these parts...
... that says fireworks shoot out of the Super Savior's hands when they perform weddings and baptisms at the Solid Rock Church.

Then again, rumors abound about The Giant Jesus of I-75. He was even featured prominently in a recent Dave Matthews Band video. :D

about 'graven images'? I guess there are no needy people in Ohio if the churches can spend this much money on an...atrocity like this. This is truly disgusting.

8. And, ya know, that picture doesn't even do it justice.
This statue is absolutely freaking HUGE. I mean, you just have no idea. It practically stops traffic on that stretch of I-75, with motorists craning their necks and likely muttering, "What in the hell is that?"

5. this seems to be a trend
Icons, statues and what not--the bigger the better. Cost is no object and no one seems to think it obscene to spend so much on an object and so little on the population who live here. They spend more time building and displaying things like huge rocks of the Ten Commandments but don't seem to follow what's written on them. Would they be as open minded if there were huge Buddas or other statuary reaching to the stars?

6. So much for the commandment against idolotry.
2nd commandment:
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

Wouldn't U think these rabid, religious whackos would B following the very laws they want placed in every public place in the US and all schools? Or is this yet another hypocrisy thing. We're supposed to accept the 'word of god' when it comes 2 creation but we can ignore it when it relates 2 laws?......how does this work anyway? I'm confused under the 'new' red government.

10. Solid Rock Church spent untold dollars on a "VOTE THE BIBLE" truck.
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 03:15 PM by VolcanoJen
They drove it around the site of John Kerry's late October rally at Fifth Third Field in Dayton; it was Kerry's last trip to Dayton.

It was plastered on the side of a semitruck, VOTE THE BIBLE! with Solid Rock Church written underneath.

The pastor of Solid Rock Church, Lawrence Bishop, is a real piece of work, as well. He runs commercials on local television, mostly featuring him riding his beautiful Quarter Horses and Pintos around his expansive ranch adjacent to the church. Not much talk of God or salvation, but plenty of talk about Larry Bishop and his pretty horses that God has sent to him.

Pastor Bishop must have forgotten about that little "vow of poverty" clause.

Here's the website for his ranch:

...a huge crucifix just outside Ann Arbor that could be seen for miles. Two well-traveled highways intersect nearby, so it would be seen thousands during their daily commutes. Thank goodness the township nixed the idea.

I feel for you, having to see it daily.

P.S. I LOVE the Jayhawks

That would fit in perfectly in Vegas! Think about it: the MGM Grand has the huge gold lion ... the Luxor has the enormous pyramid ... and the "Wingnut" has the colossal Jesus!

Will someone please explain to me why these people have to display their religious beliefs so ... um ... prominently? I don't have a problem with anyone worshiping the god of their choice, but damn ... are they so freakin' insecure about their beliefs that they have to build a jumbo Jesus to validate them? It sort of reminds me of those "macho" guys who buy the big trucks with the monster-sized wheels to show people how "masculine" they are. :eyes:

for that.

But I'm sure that makes them feel better than the teachings of Christ - which DO tell of feeding the hungry and all of that other librul gobbledygook. x(

Christ's teachings were good. Turning Jesus into a giant false idol made of stone is just... stupid, amongst other choice words.

...this is all an insidious VRWC to turn our minds into jello thru sheer stupidity. I feel like I'm being bombarded daily with mind-numbing kitch, arrogance and lack of wisdom. Faith without deeds is dead, but faith without wisdom is postively alive and vibrant, and living somewhere in Solid Rock, Ohio.

Unbelievable... also, Chris Janning incorrectly reported that the statue was erected on I-95, so remember to remain thankful for the little things.

"It's a reminder of what the season is all about," reported Chris.

59. Religions always waste money
I am struck by this fact when I travel. Europe's giant ornate churches filled with loads of commissioned art works. Western religion is not alone, China was full of the same, except that the money was spent on giant Buddas.

It is all about erecting the most impressive symbol of your loyalty to god, so that he might realize your faith is more pure, perhaps give you a sure ticket into the promised land. Sad and pathetic if you ask me. Guess the hungry can huddle up next to this monstrosity for warmth. :evilfrown: :puke:
