Dean: The Third World War is against Women and Families...column.
http://www.elynews.com/archive/2004/11/26/Opinion/310397.html

SNIP.."A similar campaign of lies and distortions is being waged to raise questions about the safety and effectiveness of condoms. Men and women across Africa are dying of AIDS because religious fundamentalists have persuaded them not to use condoms on the basis that the manufacturers have supposedly infected condoms with the HIV virus. In sub-Saharan Africa, 27 million are infected with HIV and about 20 million have already died of AIDS. Supplies of U.S.-donated condoms and other contraceptives have been reduced significantly in at least 29 countries. Men in sub-Saharan Africa have access to an average of only three condoms a year. In southern Africa, where over a quarter of the adult population is living with HIV/AIDS, unavailability of condoms is a death sentence."

SNIP.." The human suffering caused by these misguided policies and inadequate funding is staggering:

-- 600,000 women and girls die worldwide every year from pregnancy and childbirth -- a figure equal to U.S. deaths in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam combined.

-- 140,000 women bleed to death each year during childbirth.

-- 75,000 women die each year trying to end their pregnancies. The U.N. estimates that worldwide, 50,000 women and girls try to induce abortions on themselves each day (18.3 million per year). Many of those who survive face life-long, disabling pain.

-- Approximately 100,000 women die each year from infection, and another 40,000 women die from the agony of prolonged labor..."EMD SNIP

I find it interesting that this column does get published in some very conservative papers, who also publish Dick Morris and Michael Reagan, Dean's fellow Cagle columnists. He says we need to take our message to the other side, and he often does.

2. We really need him to head the DNC
I can't think of anybody else, other than Al Gore, who regularly speaks the truths we need to hear on a regular basis.

3. Religious leaders "lying" about
condoms being infected with the "HIV virus"?

How Machiavellian is that?

I'm glad Dean is getting this news out there..This is deplorable that in 2004, medieval practices are still going on.

4. Powerful piece!
We need to follow Dean's lead and keep hammering these numbers away at those who support a diminishing/ban on family planning services in the U.S. or abroad.

the equivalent of adding a new U.S. population every four years."

I can't say enough: this (family planning, population issues, etc.) is what Democrats should be talking about.

A reminder from the Doctor: "very few Americans would ban all abortions under every circumstance." We own these issues, the majority is on our side. Let's start acting like it, and maybe even bring these issues up once in a while.

And yes, of course I nominated this for the homepage.
