Is it crazy to expect the UN to do something...

about the ongoing slaughter in Iraq? I'm well aware that US holds veto power in the SC, so nothing is really going to get done... but.... ?!?!!

Between 100-200 thousand casualties by most estimates, documented murder and torture of POWS ( on FILM, yet!). Execution of POWs ( ON FILM). Documented malnutrition. Now, credible accts. of use of poison gas and depleted uranium by the invading army... all this despite news blackout.

Might be a symbolic victory to get Bush Co. to veto a resolution calling for NEGOTIATIONS. ( Isn't that, basically what the UN does in these instances? Push for negotiations?)

Can US citizens petition the UN independent of this gov't?
Aren't there some precedents for this related to... maybe it was reparations for African Americans?

1. Even if resolutions for sanctions (or worse) are passed
with near unanimity, the US still holds veto power.

Expect to see sanctions from outside the UN. The WTO has already approved sanctions against US products because of US dumping of cloth, metals and corn. This is likely to expand greatly, and the WTO isn't the only organization that will become involved.

The world is as alarmed at Bush's fiscal profligacy as it is by his imperial ambition. Nations will begin to use whatever they have in an attempt to force change in both.

The US remains the world's biggest market for goods and services. As Bush bankrupts the working and middle classes, that market disappears, and any depression here will become worldwide very quickly.

And Bush won't have a clue what to do.

2. With Kofi Annan in charge?????
Are you high? UN doesn't do shit under him except utter little passive-aggressive soundbites. The entire organization is a poodle for the chimp with that lackey in charge.
