" 72-year-old great-grandmother is preparing for deployment to the war zone in Iraq and will become one of the oldest Department of Defense civilian workers in the war zone.

"I volunteered," said Lena Haddix of Lawton, who has five children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. "I wanted to do something for the country, because I was always left behind taking care of the children."

Haddix was a military wife from 1950 until 1979, and has worked at the Fort Sill Post Exchange, or PX, since 1977. "

---- And yes, i know she volunteered. but since when does the government accept people like this? Helloooooo, draft.

2. Still not worse than sending 18 year olds to combat
At least, if she dies (and I hope she doesn't, OF COURSE), she will have lived a full life. Those guys are just starting out. AND she asked to go, so...I see nothing exceptional here.

4. Not a "recruit" (not a soldier).
Lena Haddix works for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES.)

AAFES operates Post/Base Exchanges (department stores for military pesonnel), Shopettes (small convenience stores), Class VI (liquor stores), barber shops, and gas stations.

Ms. Haddix volunteered to go to Iraq and work at a PX there. I'm damned proud of her!

Are you advocating age discrimination?

The Pagan Preacher
I don't turn the other cheek.
