Raise your hand if you've turned TV news off.
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 12:36 PM by devilgrrl
:hi:

Since the election, other than the Law & Order shows, Movies and NFL, I've basically turned off my television. I'm definitely done with TV news, local, the Networks and especially cable news. From now on it's newspapers, internet, magazines and books, I can't take it anymore, I'm sick of my intelligence being insulted.

Has the election caused anyone else to blow off the TV set?

52. Way less TV
I get the news off of the internet. My Family is spending time reading and playing board games and watching way less TV.

We stopped going to the movies about a year ago. The Hollywood crowd is so fake and full of themselves anyway. We as a family are getting along so much better and the kids are doing wonderful in school this year. I wish we had done this years ago.

though I never have watched Olbermann...
I have to say, as far as stress levels dropping: last week I was on vacation with the Prophetess' family for Thanksgiving, and I spent no time in front of the TV or computer, or getting news. My stress was so low last week...

Except for the 3 shows a week that I simply can't live without.
But I'll be making exceptions this holiday season. I need to see Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I'll be watching with my 5 year old nephew. He has already started singing the song and asked why the other reindeers wouldn't let him play...before anyone else could answer, Aunt Rubyduby chimed in with because the others are all elitest Republicans and Rudolph is a good Democrat. Maybe it's a good thing I don't have kids of my own....

14. I don't watch any TV except Formula 1
and haven't done for years. I can't stand television; all I have is a tiny portable.

There's a nice scene in Midnight Cowboy of a show on TV with poodles (I think it was poodles) dressed up and doing tricks. Matt Stone and Trey Parker possibly borrowed that idea for their Cartman at the tea party sketch where the audience are laughing gormlessly at something similar. And there's something similar again in the Beavis and Butthead Do Christmas special. Sheesh, dogs dressed up on TV as entertainment...get a life.

Have a shifty at tvturnoff.org for some great articles on why TV is such an insidious influence. There's also a good article in Scientific American that shows how TV induces alpha pattern brain waves, the precondition for brainwashing and subliminal suggestions. If I find the link I'll post it.

Nothing else, not local news, not cable not even Dan Rather, since the election. Only started watching Olbermann again last week. Anyone know when the quit cable date is, is it Dec 7th?

I have stopped watching the tv news networks, I only watch it for a little if I catch some breaking news as I surf the channels.

I get all my news from the internet now. I do watch O'Reilly once in a while though because I have the web site and I have to keep up to date on his lies. But I rarely watch his whole show like I used to in the past.

I can not stand the corporate media anymore, especially since the election.

It was the runup to the war that did it for me. We were in the streets lookin for truth & couldn't find anything but lies on the teevee. Haven't watched any or cut my hair since.

Well ... occasional look at Free Speech TV and LinkTV, though I don't know why I pay for the satellite anymore.

Internet is plenty good news. Check out http://www.radio4all.net for free archives of independent radio shows in MP3 format. The Unwelcome Guests interview show is the greatest thing going.

Now the only televised news I see is the Japanese news on the International Channel (which is mostly fluff, but good language practice) and occasionally News World International.

Other than that, I watch a bit of PBS (Nova, Frontline, Wide Angle, Bill Moyers, British comedies, and an occasional Masterpiece Theater), a bit of HBO (when they're running a series I like), the Monday night mysteries on BBC America, and an occasional movie on Turner Classic Movies, Sundance, or IFC.

As a source for news and information, they have become as irrelevent to me as the National Enquirer. Plus I don't want them to get any ratings from my help. I get all my news from online newpapers.

Boycotting the corporate-owned TV news is important, but I also think it's important to support the good stuff. I watch LINK TV and Sundance, HBO and good educational stuff.

:hi: I never watched fox news (could not stomache it from the get go). I haven't watched the network news (abc, cbs, nbc), in like about forever, ok, about 10 years. I used to be a CNN nut. I used-a-could watch CNN almost 24/7. But since Nov. 4th I gave up on them. Now if the tv is on it's on CSPAN, History Channel, A&E, Discovery Channel, Learning Channnel, Court TV, Lifetime Movie Channel and Football. I'm almost a month CNNFree and doing very well.

Thanks for letting me share,
~kydo

ps. do I get a blue chip at 30 days?

67. Happily not watching political hacks or "news" for dummies!
My rule is watch nothing where your demanded to believe people because 'other people say' they are 'trusted or balanced'. If the newszoids can not show how their stories are selected, shaped and accurate then why bother to watch non-credible talentless people. Plenty of books out there for great fiction! Much happier without the news trash!

68. i'm done with the lying liers ...
i suppose if more and more of us just tuned out, the mainstream media would be faced with a tough decision ...

on one hand, they could move right to cater to their remaining viewers ... but doing this would be settling for half a loaf ... there's no way those greedy corporate leeches could tolerate losing 1/2 or more of their revenues ...

on the other hand, they might either move left to try to retain some of us or they might actually start separate stations of newscasts to cater to the left ...

of course, none of this will ever happen if our actions don't have an economic impact on them ... so, tune 'em out ... their mind numbing propaganda won't do you any good ...

I TiVO Olberman, basically to improve his ratings. Sometimes I watch it, usually if some one here said it was worth turning it on. Otherwise the only news I get is from here, or Jon Stewart, or from a UK news site.
Otherwise I watch football, a couple of drama shows and do a lot of cross stitch.

I'm much happier without the likes of CNN, et al.

With the information super highway suite of internets, I read news from all over the world including the blogsphere! I've not only turned off the news, I'm down to near zero TV and total zero for welfare media, e.g. PBS, NPR. No commercials, no ratings bumps. I do watch 'Boston Legal' with my wife. Very funny and sick.

I'm so glad I never gave one dime to PBS or NPR (had something to do with no pro wrestling on PBS).

Don't buy their shit. Don't watch their shit.

Corporate America controls the media and we get manufactured news.
Corporate America now controls the voting machines and we get manufactured elections.

So much of what is called news isn't worth watching. My bitterest feelings are for CNN, because what they have the potential to do. Everyone knows what they're getting from NBC, Fox, CSpan and PBS. But people are being snookered watching the profound-sounding whores on CNN.

They could be America's truly fair news portal to the world. Instead, they've sold out to the corporate-types. While presenting a patina of "balance", all they do in the end is ratify the transgressions of RoveCo as normal, or at least business as usual. I can't enough describe my contempt.

It shows that dwelling for a long time in a red state like they do has an effect over time. Total sell-outs.

125. We must march against Fox and the rigged election.
Not talk. Action. STREET action. Action in the STREETS. Huge public protest. A joint protest against the rigged election and Fox right in front of Fox World Headquarters in New York with the chant, “Rupert Murdoch, tell the truth! Fascists rigged the voting booth!” Fox is headquartered in mid-Manhattan on the SECOND floor. We’re going to be right outside their windows by the thousands screaming our guts out where they can hear us. Bad vibrations? Too bad studio soundproofing isn’t perfect. We must deny them legitimacy at all costs. Bush didn’t win. His election is a fake. Vast numbers of Americans still don’t know this because Bush shills like Fox cover it up. Fox must be targeted. Their headquarters are in New York. The other papers and media in New York will cover this protest because they all hate Fox’s living guts in New York. See this blog:

A Call To March On Fox
For refusing to tell the truth about the rigged election! —

http://acalltomarchonfox.blogspot.com/

Read it. Read it all. Contact the blogger there to get involved.

Go to this thread and participate in the discussion — A call to march against the rigged election — includes extensive discussion about the planned march on Fox/rigged election:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2688242

Add your comments there, keep that thread kicked. There’s going to be a huge march in New York combining protest against the rigged election and the Bush shills like Fox who cover it up, a double whammy. After that, the cat will be out of the bag and Bush will have lost legitimacy.

Why is that important? Because legitimacy is essential for de facto power. Official or “de jure” power is not enough for a leader to maintain control. He has to also have the INTANGIBLES of legitimacy — de facto authority. That’s why presidents can become lame ducks in their second term. Bush must be denied LEGITIMACY. His whole presidency must be publicly DELEGITIMIZED. People in other countries will hear about the march too. This will add to his difficulties diplomatically overseas. To deny legitimacy we must march against the rigged election.

Where? At the number one shill covering it up — Fox. Fox Headquarters in New York. Fox may or may not admit we are in front of their New York offices but the other New York news organizations will because they hate Fox. See the above blog for full details on that and the whole march plan. See and post on the above thread to get involved. Keep that thread kicked.

I refuse to watch any of the cable networks, and local stations don't happen to be much better.

The news was the reason I was disengaged from politics for much of my life. I have come to the realization that complex issues cannot be tackled between commercial breaks, by word-mincing, financially beholden talking-heads with partisan agendas.

There is nothing quite so sickening as the cable news networks and their ratings-first, controversy allergic, lemming-like mentalities.

138. About two years tv free here
We did watch the debates and the daily show coverage of the election results, but that's about it. I don't miss it one bit!

Saved $30 a month by cancelling cable; have more room in living area. :-)

140. Seinfeld reruns, Science channel, INDY and Sundown
I cancelled my local newspaper subscription because they endorsed Bush and I told them that was the reason. I've found that real journalism, with in-depth research, terrific factual writing is at home on the Internet. Its the kind of news I grew up with. I have no desire to watch a bunch of pretty heads prattling on, not having a clue what they're saying or how it impacts our country.

141. The day after the election I told everybody to turn off the damn TV
I never even saw Kerry's concession speech, because I couldn't bear it. It really does feel better to stay away from the TV, with the occasional exception of televised interviews and CSPAN.

149. I've reduced my TV viewing by about 90%.
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 09:57 PM by truth2power
I don't have cable. What's on CBSNBCABC, with few exceptions, is worthless shit. I mean there really is NOTHING worth watching.

I no longer watch the late evening news. Almost all prime time programming is taken up with so-called "reality" shows. People eating reindeer testicles, swapping spouses, thrown into tubs full of spiders or some such crap. Good Gawd! No wonder people are behaving like lunatics.

My commercial TV viewing is limited to "Judging Amy" and "West Wing" when they aren't being pre-empted by some useless tripe fit for a two year old.

I do watch PBS - Nova, National Geographic specials, and of course, Bill Moyers. :-)

edit> Oh yeah...I gave up the Sabbath Gasbags a long time ago.

150. Not only have I turned off TV news (back in 2000)
but I've personally convinced at least a dozen people to do the same.

They don't like being lied to and insulted anymore than I do.

Good riddance.

151. Yup, very little news
I watch C-Span Washington Journal occasionally, and once in a while the local news, but I can't stand that either.

Thanks to our local library I can download e-books and will be listening to them in my spare time.
