Martha Stewart Subscriber Renewals Higher
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 04:20 PM by chookie
" In a sign that many consumers aren't concerned by Martha Stewart (news - web sites)'s personal legal travails, readers of her flagship magazine are renewing their subscriptions at a pace well ahead of industry norms. "
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=509&ncid=509&e=6&u=/ap/20041129/ap_on_bi_ge/martha_stewart_subscribers

19% above industry standards!

Also notice -- KMart is up, WalMart is down.

My take on this -- not just loyalty, but a protest. People rally behind her because she was made the Scapegoat for corporate crime, while Bush's buddies buy each other cashmere underwear and weapons and armies.

People are rewarding KMart for being loyal to Martha throughout and after her show trial. People are getting pissed off at WalMart and making their voices heard with their wallets.

WalMart "jumped the shark", folks. It brought such economic devastation to ordinary working people that they can't afford to shop there any more. Add political backlash, and you can see that they're going to have a bad bad year.

Wait till WalMart and the Army are competing for "workers"....

Hell, I never read her magazine until last year -- I bought it as a "Fuck you!" to president pinhead, to show I trusted Martha Stewart far more than I do him. It's actually a terrific magazine.

2. they might
They may take the whole US economy down with them too!

They expanded WAY too far. Empires are easier to obtain than to maintain.

The people they screwed can no longer afford to shop there. Thanks to the political decisions that the Republican party advocates.

Anyone think China isn't playing the long game on this?

Martha Stewart a hit at prison mess hall, inmate says

Roman Catholic nun Carol Gilbert, 57, who is serving time in the same prison as the famous homemaker, says she enjoys eating with Stewart, although the setting could be better.

``We're not talking about a tea party,'' Gilbert's attorney, Sue Tyburski, told the Rocky Mountain News for a story in Saturday's editions. ``We're talking about a big cafeteria setting with the terrible food.''

Gilbert is serving 33 months on convictions of obstructing the national defense and damaging government property for her role in an anti-war protest at a missile silo in 2002.

Stewart was convicted on obstruction of justice in May and began serving her five-month sentence at the women's federal prison Oct 8. Stewart, 63, is getting ``kid-glove'' treatment from the guards, Tyburski said.``She's in great demand for people to visit with at lunchtime,'' she said.

4. I also have been buying her mag in support!
I never have before, mainly because I don't need any more mags, but I am so pissed off at how she has been treated.

7. Stock is way the hell up since she got tossed in the clink....
They way,way underestimated her base and how much they care about her and her products. And add in the fact that she's staring out of a cell while Kenny Boy still runs loose and you've got plenty of pissed off people.

10. Martha was a Dem when she went in,

I'm guessing she'll be much more liberal when she gets out. She's locked up with a nun, Sister Carol Gilbert who "is serving 33 months on convictions of obstructing the national defense and damaging government property for her role in an anti-war protest at a missile silo in 2002."

Martha got off much lighter: "Stewart was convicted on obstruction of justice in May and began serving her five-month sentence at the women's federal prison Oct. 8."

"Gilbert bolstered suggestions that Stewart is writing a book about her prison experience. Tyburski said her client she hopes she writes about women who have received lengthy sentences under federal mandatory drug-sentencing laws."

I agree with Sister, I hope Martha writes about a group of women who have been shafted by the law, often for loyalty to their men.

12. I purposely buy the Martha Stewart brand at K-Mart
As a big F*** YOU to a govt that railroaded Stewart and tossed a nun in jail while Ken Lay walks around free after ruining the lives of thousands.

As for WalMart, I've been boycotting them and their slave labor goods for years.

13. I think it's because she has a great product
I love the magazine because it has lovely photography and it plays into our fantasies of perfect domesticity. ( As if anyone of us has the time to spend on her projects.) And if you want to paint your room, and you have no eye for color or design, Martha makes it easy to choose the paint. I'm sure just as many Republicans cancelled their subscriptions as there were Dems who started new subscriptions. Let's give her some credit here! Her magazine's doing well because she's a smart cookie, and she has great taste.

14. I respect her because she attached her name to a low-rent store --
K-mart, when she could have gone upscale and made probably even more money. But now people with very little money can buy nice-looking stuff at K-mart.

She's a populist! I like that.

15. I started buying it, too
Just to show a bit of support. It's a pretty magazine but, frankly, not all that interesting. I just leaf through it thinking, "How bored do you have to be to do this stuff?"
