Boycott Macy's says-The Committee to Save "Merry Christmas"
Here is the Faux News story (Paul Harvey mentioned this on his show)

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,125516,00.html

Manuel Zammarano has formed the Committee to Save Merry Christmas (search) to protest the fact that big retailers profit from Christmas shopping dollars but refuse to mention the holiday by name.

His group has boycotted Federated Department Stores Inc. (search), which owns Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, for collecting Christmas cash without giving Christmas credit for all the end-of-year gift buying.

Here is the organization's site
http://savemerrychristmas.org/index.html

The War:

A covert and deceptive war has been waged on Christmas to remove any mention of it from the public square during the Christmas season. During the past several years, and with great effectiveness, we have observed a consistent and relentless move to culturally pressure merchants, businessmen and individuals to remove the words “Merry Christmas” from their advertising, decorations and promotional materials.

List of Federated Department Store chains:

Bloomingdale's
Lazarus-Macy's

Bon-Macy's
Macy's East

Burdine's-Macy's
Macy' West

Goldsmith's-Macy's
Rich's Macy's

3. Ok, I hope you're kidding
But if not I guess it's screw the Jews who don't celebrate Christmas, but buy gifts because Hanukkah falls around the same time of year.

Or damn those people who celebrate Kwanzaa (spelling could be off here, sorry) - also around the same time.

Or what about those of us who aren't particularly religious?

Happy Holidays covers it all. You don't offend anyone and seriously, people being forced to give a greeting sounds about as sincere George "I'm a uniter, not a divider" Bush reaching out to the world.

11. excuse me, but a full quarter of this country is not Christian.
Get that through your head. And the merchants have realized that we don't buy where we don't feel welcome and we have money to spend.

If you want to live in a theocracy, there's a lovely one in Iran, and nice one shaping up in Iraq. Saudi Arabia's not bad for it, either. But not here.

16. More than a quarter
I know that the percentage of people with no religion is 15% so that's not even including the non-Christian religions.

7. Cross Posting
I started a thread on extending season's greetings here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x2118239#2118598 because of a strange incident that happened to me last xmas at, of all places, Macy's. At the time, I thought the guy was just a little too stressed out, or maybe had too much nog, but I wonder if he wasn't one of these assholes?

My partner and I do not celebrate xmas, but at the last minute his father decided he wanted to join us for the holiday and insisted on giving us gifts. So guess who was tapped to go to the mall at 4 PM on xmas eve? Anyway, I was standing in line at Macy's and the person in front of me was evidently a hard-core "Merry Christmas" kind of person, because after the clerk rang up his gifts and said, "Thanks for shopping at Macy's, have a happy holiday," the customer went ballistic.

"Christmas," he said.

"What?"

"It's Christmas. Tomorrow is Christmas. As in CHRIST-mas,"

"Okay, whatever,"

"No, not 'whatever'. It's Christmas. As in Christ. You do know about Christ, don't you?"

Just then, the clerk (who looked like a tired, disaffected college-age kid) said, "You know what pal? It's Hannukah, Solstice, New Year's and Kwanzaa too. So whatever the hell you celebrate, make it a happy one, all right?"

9. Once again: "Christianity Under Attack"
Poor Christians, nobody respects them. Actually, I respect quite a few.... But that's the new meme fostered by (among others) the Christian Reconstructionists. http://chalcedon.edu/underwriters.php

And the Save Merry Christmas folks link to another lovely site that points out that One of the greatest myths about the biblical view of creation is that it is based on religion—not science. As a result, Christians who believe in six-day creation are often looked down upon. However, Tom De Rosa shows in his new book, Evidence for Creation, that six-day creation is rooted in science, and it does not contradict the Bible!

12. That's the foundation of the Christofascist movement!
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 02:27 PM by Walt Starr
The lie that Christianity is under attack when, in fact, Christofascism is attacking everything BUT Christofascism.

Of course, there is truth in the statement that Christianity is under attack. True Christianity will always be under attack by the Christofascists.

13. As if merchants have to be "pressured"
If they only wanted Christian customers, they'd stick to saying Merry Christmas. Since non-Christians spend money too, the pressure is economic, not cultural.

WTF is wrong with "holiday"? It means "holy day." How much more religious can it be?

would probably piss off Christians if the advertisers stuck "Christmas" in there instead of "Holiday." Sounds kinda sacreligeous.

These people. *sigh* I'd really like to roast their chestnuts on an open fire.

Edit: Typo, and I think I still mispelled it.

21. Hi you all!
Ever since I was born, I was taugth to celebrate Christmas, as in the birth of Jesus Christ (which no one really knows on what exact day it happened but which the church decided to celebrate on Dec. 25)And I learned to do this and give GIFTS ON THAT DAY on account of my American, Mississippi born mother, eventhough we lived in a country where people did not celebrate SANTA CLAUS but where they celebrated THE THREE KINGS as the day of their gift giving.

I've always told people MERRY CHRISTMAS and I've heard back from some HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Because the celebration of the birth of Christ is such a hypocritical thing for GWB, because the birth of Christ has been hijacked by so many rabid christians right wingers who are using christ for their own agenda and political purposes, because the Christ that they present to the world and to the rest of us here in America is not the gentle Christ who was humbled in his Passion to a degree that GWB, his 'why should i worry my pretty little brains' mom, or his full of mud CIA poppy's hands, know nothing about ... I will not turn on Christmas lights, I will tell no one MERRY CHRISTMAS, I will not listen to Christmas Carols and I will extend my welcome to the memory of the birth of Christ only to Christ Himself in my own heart and to those very close family members who also happen to know this very gentle Christ.

It is my way of setting straight in my head and in my heart everything that is currently wrong with what the Bush administration is doing to this world... and the Christ that they are presenting to it.

Even under Bush's terms all the cards have said "season's greetings" or Happy Holidays.

I can tell you that pisses off the FReeps to no end.

27. No Merry Christmas in the Bushes card...
..something "happy" "joy" "song in your heart" sorta generic blather...lovely card and paid for by the RNC. Guess that's why my name wasn't on it.

Really, Happy Holidays is fine with me. I gave up on Christmas when I found out Santa was a lie...ho, ho, ho. And since I'm not a religious person, it's just another huge BUY=SELL=BUY event shoved down everybody's throats.

28. Happy Everything Day!
Place I used to work had banners hung all over the place.

Christmas

Hannukah

Solstice

Kwanzaa

Eid al-Fitr

and more.

Just about every holiday celebrated by people at that employer had a banner for it.

Macy's and other places can do the same and it won't even cost that much.

I think that the song "Cashing in on Xmas" is the most apt for the season anyway. The retailers are already whining about how they aren't selling as much as they wanted to on Crass Consumerism Day (the day after Thanksgiving).

29. Can someone get it into the thick heads of these people
that Christians hijacked "Christmas" first - it was a celebration LONG before they appropriated it and it has NOTHING to do with the supposed bitrhday of Jesus which if it happened at all was more likely to have occured quite a few months after Dec.

If it's OK for Christians to steal the festival for their own means then why shouldn't anyone else.

It IS a "holiday" period not just a Christian one and it ALWAYS has been so "Happy Holidays" is more valid than "Merry Christmas" anyway
