NOT moving to Canada
I was one of the people who, right after the election, wanted to move to Canada. We were very serious. So, my husband was actually offered two different jobs, one in Australia and one in Toronto, Canada. Good jobs. We thought about it all weekend and decided...... SCREW THOSE BASTARDS!! They aren't getting rid of us! We aren't going anywhere! This is our damn country! Our ancestors were here since before the revolution and helped found this country!(Not that that makes us anymore American than a new immigrant, but we have a history here.) We're going to stay here and fight and raise our daughter to be a true patriot and fight to protect our democracy, too.
Just thought I'd let you know.
PS Several of our friends felt the same and also decided to stay after all, so sorry freepers. We're here to stay.

1. Yeah, same here
Heard about an interesting job in Quebec, but I really do love this country, ignorant savages and all. Maybe 2008 will change my mind.

2. Good on ya!
I was troubled by all the talk of moving north simply because if the US loses it's dems, who is gonna make it right. If ya really want to stick it where it hurts, come up here for holidays and deprive the US of tourist dollars.

3. Okay, but when they start loading up the freight cars ...
... if you can make it over the barbed wire fence, you can stay with my family. We'll probably be in Ottawa or Vancouver. Look us up.

4. Thanks
We aren't without a contingency plan. If we really need to get out, we will. We will revisit the idea in a couple years....If these election "irregularities" cannot be fixed and more people allow themselves to be brainwashed against their best interest, we might consider it again, but for now we are at least half the country and I believe more. (Can you say FRAUD!!??) There is still plenty of hope.
But Thanks. We really do love Canada.

5. Have you ever seen "Good Will Hunting"?
Affleck says to Matt Damon - "you are sitting on an effing lottery ticket, and you do not have the guts to cash it in."
I would like to know what you are doing that makes you optimistic. Really, I do not even know how to fight. I do not know what I can do that would make a difference. In fact, I think that leaving would be the largest symbolic punch I could land on the Republicans. 100,000 people moving to Canada would be a huge statement, and we could still vote absentee, write letters, and donate to Democrats/progressive causes from Canada.
Scores of my relatives fought in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, but it is not my country anymore. There is no way I would live in Toronto, although it was not too bad to drive through, but get me a decent job in a place like Woodstock or Paris and show me affordable housing, and I am gone.

6. I do believe that you can help from afar

and even when we planned to go, we always planned to keep voting, writing LTTE, sending what $ we could to good causes, etc. I don't blame anyone for going.
One reason we don't want to go is that we LIKE our place and our jobs. And it's really cold in Canada. :scared:

Why am I feeling optimistic? Because four years ago, I paid next to NO attention to politics and neither did any of my friends. Now we are ALL rabidly obsessed with politics and trying to change things. I don't think this is just a small trend among my little social circle. I believe people are waking up. The right has been working on this political takeover for decades because it TAKES decades to warp people's minds into voting against their own best interest. We have the truth on our side. I don't think it will take us near as long. It might take longer than we'd like, but I do believe we will get through this and maybe even be better than ever for it. Call me looney if you like.
