eeeek another evolution post..but I think I know what part of the prob is

it isn't *just* terminology (scientific meaning of theory vs. lay meaning of theory)

It is also what each side believes evolution is and what they are defending or fighting against when they say *evolution*.

Most people on this site understand evolution to mean the process by which life changes/evolves.

But that is not what evolution means to an extremist fundamentalist christian. They agree that life is continually advancing and adapting..but they don't believe that, that is what evolution is or what the theory of evolution is about...

They believe that there is only one evolution theory..

*that man evolved from apes*

and that is anathema to them, therefore they will fight to their death to keep that from being taught in schools..and because they believe this, that is what they hear and all they hear in regards to evolution, it is almost impossible to discuss evolution in other aspect with them.

I have tried to talk to family members who are fundies and you can not get past this point with them..it is the be-all and end-all of what evolution is to them.

1. One is not dealing with rational people when it comes to this subject...

It is impossible to break that very naive mentality due to the process of identity formation it is so inextricably tied to.
