Here's something nice I think Americans should know
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 02:27 PM by glarius
Here's something nice I'll bet you Americans didn't know...P.M. Paul Martin spoke of this in his speech this morning in Halifax, before George Bush spoke: It is a demonstration of our long friendship, which has endured through the years (despite George Bush)...I'm posting this here because I know CNN (MSNBC, FOX?) didn't show Martin's speech, only Bush's....
<snip>
"That’s what neighbours do. That’s what friends do. That’s what Americans did so many years ago, in 1917, when a munitions ship caught fire in Halifax harbour and exploded, killing or wounding more than 10,000 people and destroying much of the city. As word spread, Americans across the northeast pitched in to help, to do what they could. To this day, the people of Halifax send a Christmas tree each year to Boston as a gesture of thanks and friendship. It stands each December in Boston Common. This year’s tree, a 46-foot white spruce from Lunenburg, will be lit tomorrow night.".....:loveya:

1. I've never done this before but I'm kicking my own thread
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 03:49 PM by glarius
I just think Americans should know about things like this....especially during times when the relations between our two countries is rather strained.
P.S...One of the reasons for posting this is I've seen several postings where some of you said you were ashamed or embarrassed to be American...

5. Thanks for telling us.
Out in the midwest we don't here about it. Something that still chokes me up is when I think of the utter kindness of the people of Canada on 9/11.

2. The tree story
has been in all the papers here in Boston - it's a pretty big deal around here - and yes, I think especially this year. We love you guys too.

4. I kind of think of the US and Canada as twin sisters.......
One "bad girl" who ran away from home (UK) and the "good girl" who grew up without all the dramatics.

6. Don't be chumps...
This shitty country needs to go down...hard. Time for the rest of the world to play hardball with Bush's Empire. Canada and the EU and anyone else with a conscience should impose sanctions immediately....Military alliances should be dissolved. These dangerous maniacs must be stopped. This Fourth Reich must be brought to it's knees.

7. I wish more Americans
knew more about Canada than they do. I recall 3 years ago or so, Rick Mercer (is that his name? forgot. The guy from This Hour Has 22 Minutes) did a show taped in the states, asking Americans the most ridiculous questions, and they thought it was for real.. I forgot the name of the show, but I wish I had taped it! It was a frigging HOOT! It just shows how ignorant the average American is about things North of the border, and yet Canadians know all about our government, and other things of interest. What will it take to wake up Americans to want to learn more about our best friends and allies??

8. I believe the show was called...
Talking to Americans.

He had Americans congratulating Canadians on being allowed to use staplers for the first time, among other things.

10. Actually, that show couldn't be typical Americans
from what I've seen. Most people I know wouldn't buy those stunts. However, if you look hard enough you might (but not typical).

11. The show demonstrated
how ignorant Americans are about anything Canadian. Since most Americans never travel anywhere but to another American city, and not to another country.. how could they possibly know about any other country other than America. It's a pity, and it leads to mass ignorance.

9. I wish we were worthy of your hospitality
I just saw the Lizard King's Halifax speech on CSPAN. What a sham. Everyone there KNOWS GW is destroying democracy in America and around the world. I couldn't believe Paul Martin kept smiling as long as he did with that gross reptile in his presence. Try turning the sound off and watching... Personally, I can't take hearing Dumbya's whiney voice. I NEVER could.

Do you think Canada will accept financially poor immigrants in their 40s?... with a Ph.Ds.?
